Hi

I own my own property but have sold and now buying a new property with my wife (whose never owner a property before). Would we be able to claim the exemption for first time buyers?

im assuming not otherswise it would be open for exploitation.

any advice would be appreciated

thanks

No I'm afraid it is only available to "real" first time buyers ,ie those who have never owned or part owned a house previously .

Not sure it applies now, around ten years ago ,though depends if your wife’s finances can afford to buy the house on her own, as we did that on a new build and they accepted her as a first time buyer to get the discounts etc. As I was not going to be on the mortgage etc. And I gave her the extra I had left over from my sale as deposit.

i would think not. Hmrc does not favour married couples when it comes to tax on property unless one of you die
