Found 19th Oct 2006
I'm looking for a laptop for my younger sister for university use. She will mainly use it for course-work, Internet, email and possibly watching the occasional DVD. The laptop must have Wifi so she can connect to her campus network. Budget is £400, any suggestions?

medionshop had a few nice deals, all listed in hotdeals.

If she's in a rush wait for the next (or current? not searched) Dell 1300 laptop offer @ the £350-£400ish range, MikeT is your man there.

A mate of mine bought this machine for his wife last week for £399 however it seems to have crept up to £418 since, Cracking bit of kit, everything she will need and with a 14" screen makes it easier to move about.

Add a 3 year warranty for £60 and it will be hassle free uni

In the description, it says 'powerful 64bit dual core system'.

Is this dual core?!

Cheers

Phil to answer your question its not Dual core, but 64 bit using the Model MK-36 processor.

I searched for ages for the best laptop for under £400 and I agree with freebiehunter that this is the one.

Buy it from ]savastore.com and you can get for as little as £382.66 after 3% quidco!!!

They're selling like hot cakes at the moment. There were over 120 in stock less than 48hrs ago. Last time I checked, there were only 75 left.

Thanks for all the advice people. I'm torn between the Savastore Acer model and the Acer 5003WLMi model which I've found for £394.99 with double memory.

No contest between the 5003 and the 5101. The 5101 has a better processor (2.0GHz) and a better graphics chipset (128MB ATI). Besides, go through Quidco and the better model is cheaper also! Don't forget that savastore offer free delivery, whereas it's £4.99 from Think4.

This is a good bargain keninblack but, for the extra £25, the Acer at savastore is better in ALL departments apart from, arguably, bulid quality. It all depends on your budget and requirements.

The ebuyer link says Page Not Found.
EDIT: The link is working now, and yes, this is most definitely a comparable machine with an intel processor. Only the smaller screen and the extra £20 to split them really.

This is also a great article on the AMD Turion64 from ]GamePC.
