Wifi phone, iPod touch ideas for a 5 year old

I need some ideas please. My 5 year old loves my iPhone but obviously I'm not going to buy him one for Christmas as he is only 5. I was just wondering what else is available that I could buy. An iPad would be ideal but too expensive. I don't like the idea of a phone but he would only use it for the apps. Has anyone got one of these leapster explorers? Any idea if the stuff will bs free to download? If do it might be better to buy an old iPod touch. There must be something similar designed for the childrens market but can't seem to find it

Why not let him continue to use your iPhone, and buy something for a 5 year old.

i wouldn't recommend painting on your iPhone and hanging it up to dry or standing on it, in the hope it will magically fly you to the 'outside world' to a Zoo.....................

but yeah you 'knew' that cos ya well clever n stuff init...........

aggree as so dose my daughter

I bought my then 5 1/2 year old daughter an ipod touch for xmas last year, despite being told its ridiculous, immoral, etc etc etc. She STILL goes out playing (back garden lol) , she STILL goes to the Zoo,! she STILL draws, paints, makes things with her craft box. But she also loves her ipod, listens to music and plays games, and has looked after it perfectly. So i would say go for it!
Unfortunately she has now decided she wants an ipad for xmas, needless to say she isn't getting one, but her dad might be lol!

5 year olds, iphones and ipads wow!

As already suggested DS, but I guess you may have already tried that.

I wasn't referring to anyone in particular in the first line of my comment, just thinking aloud about how lucky kids are these days

Flipping heck, had a mega drive when I was 8 maybe. What about a some paints and a pad. Sheesh getting a 5 year old a phone or even considering getting something like an ipod touch is crazy, maybe i'm just old fashioned seems an expensive toy at that age.

Finally, a sensible bit of advice.

iPads and iPods for kids FFS...

The thing is, kids nowadays are surrounded by advanced technology and want to experiment with it themselves. (from my own personal experience) Yes, it is an expensive thing to buy, but you know your own children, why would for example myself buy my daughter something like a previous poster mentioned (vtech) when it would be completely wasted on her. I would rather spend my money on something she is interested in and will play with.
I understand all the sceptics, and can completely understand where you are coming from, but i didn't listen to any of you last november when i got slaughtered for the same post on here, and took my own advice lol!

My two year old loves my iPhone - All the kids apps etc, he also loves the iPad - I wouldn't get him his own but he is constantly playing on them!

Some very critical people on here today...as long as a child is doing all the usual playing with toys I don't really see a problem. (except the obvious pressure on other parents which is not the OPs fault)
How about a second hand touch. I think there has recently been an updated version so you might be able to get one second hand. I would check out what apps might be available first for a young child just in case there arent many suitable.

Just one thing for such a young child though is be careful if they are using headphones as they might put the music up far too loud which may damage their ears.

Thanks so much for your replies, he already has a ds and a wii but he would love a little handheld thing which an download the apps and play his games and perhaps have sown educational stuff. I don't want him breaking my phone and really don't wantvto spend mite than £50. I justvthink that the leapster ones may not be very good. I totally agree with the whole thing that he should be painting but he goes to football, rugby, swimming, Sunday school and is due to start beavers so he doesn't really have too much time that he play on the stuff. He lives to play out but this time if year the don't get much chance and he really isn't a toy type of child. I spent a fortune last yet and e doesn't play with the stuff. Don't get wrong he does know how to entertain himselfxand will paint and play with his brother and sister I just wondered if anyone knew of a childrens equivalent of an iPod.

I think the closest thing to an iPod is the DS, which you already have. Both my 6 year olds have a DS but also like using my iPod, only thing that worries me is how easily the screen could break.

If you think he can look after one, I would go for an iPod over any 'kids' toy, they just aren't good enough and 5 year olds have no trouble using an iPod. Some of the educational apps for the iPod are pretty good too, and way cheaper that Vtech/Leapster games.....

And the fact the phone radiation would be very dangerous for a 5yr old … And the fact the phone radiation would be very dangerous for a 5yr old child. No wonder so many kids are fostered if this is the level of parents out there.

I was talking about a touch not an iphone which i agree would be dreadful to give to a young child. Mine got their phones when they went to high school. Believe it or not most of us are good parents but some people presume otherwise.

To be honest the screen has completely surprised me how strong and robust it actually is
