Wii not reading discs, any ideas?

Purchased a Wii off fleabay listed as "faulty drive" thought it maybe a gear or that it would'nt suck discs in, but at the price it was so cheap I thought I'll just whack another drive in it. Now thing is, tested it and it takes the discs fine, spins fine, but just does'nt seem to be reading them, but yet it reads Gamecube games fine. So thought I'd ask if any of you lot know anything about it and whether its a quick fix, or whether I should stick to my original plan of replacing the drive?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

hmmm, sounds like it maybe something a bit more sinister.

If its taking The discs and running GC Games then the drive I would say is fine, but as the formats are quite different interms of the way the chip and software runs the games it could be a firmware issue.

Sound like someone may have had a go at chipping or modding.

On the other hand some people suggest that it may be a optics on the laser due to the difference in disc and data formats of the GC and Wii games it pics up the simpler GC data and not the wii.

Personally I would take the top off, clean the laser optic, if that dont work then for the cost I would throw a new drive in.

You could probably still sell it for bits after messing with it.

let us know how you get on

Maybe a lazer prob or could be an imported 1 so wont read english games?

Wii should say on the bottom if its PAL or NTSC might be worth a check.

Its deffo Pal, had it apart the other day, did'nt look like it had been taken apart before to be honest, the sticky tabs were too perfect. Read online somewhere that its a common fault, and to repair it you put in the wii sports disc and let it run for 24 hours, sounds like an old wives tale to me though, plus I don't have wii sports lol.

LOL old wives tales are the best... I would have to have a go at that just to cure my curiosity.

    Try borrowing a copy

Do you get an error message when you try to launch a Wii Game? Or does it just not even try to load?

No nothing happens. Would borrow one but everybody I know has 360's lol, oh well.

Presume you have tried updating it through Internet, a new firmware update may jolt it back to life.

Take the top off again and with some cleaner give the laser len a good clean with a smooth cloth.

Give that a go, then try running a game with the lid off and see if the laser is hunting on the disc.
