PS3 will transport the audio through the HDMI connection but you do did an amp that supports the decoding of the HD audio.

Who cares about the sound that much?

people with home cinemas etc, I do have my own home cinema room (not my living room). Surround sound on a blu-ray to me is better than the picture on a 7.2 set-up, but its personal choice at the end of the day.

Would I be right in assuming you got your speakers from … Would I be right in assuming you got your speakers from poundland.

must do...damn if i had no decent speakers i doubt id bother watching hardly any films, it would just wind me up!

I have decent speakers £150 samsung 5.1 setup running through optical cable.

    Sounds fine to me.....

But according to the op he wants something even better quality???

I run opticals from the 360, ps3 to a technics AV Reciever that decodes Dolby Digital and DTS, then output it to two AE floorstanders, one AE centre, and two (rear)AE standmounts, and a active sony subwoofer.
However, in the near future i wish to upgrade the AV Reciever to handle hdmi and of course True HD would be nice!

Im not convinced you can notice the difference between
OPTICAL and TRUE HD sound???? but thats just me. Some people cant notice 1080p over non hd picture.

    to the op..
The PS3 actually does NOT support passing a Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD bitstream over HDMI to the receiver. The PS3 does include an on-board Dolby TrueHD decoder which converts TrueHD into multi-channel PCM and analog sound.

So if you want to take advantage of TrueHD with the PS3 and your receiver, then you actually have to set the Blu-Ray Disc audio output setting for HDMI (in the PS3's BD/DVD settings menu) to "PCM" instead of "bitstream." This will allow the PS3 to losslessly expand the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack into pure multi-channel PCM for decoding by your receiver. You will get better results that way than by sending a regular compressed Dolby Digital signal to the receiver as you are doing now.
