Found 30th Jul 2014
Hey guys,
Well, I decided to open up my laptop today to clean the fan it didnt really go as planned -while taking the back casing off i managed to break off the wireless on and off switch and unfortunately it broke in the off position - my laptop does work with ethernet cable though. I was wondering if I purchase this dongle will i be able to get internet again wirelessly? thank you

Don't quote me on this (I'm just guessing as it depends on the model of laptop)

I think the on / off switch can be overridden by a setting either in bios or system (on some by pressing the correct f(function button)

Its worth a try but no laptop I have ever seen with a hardware WiFi switch has had an override of any sort (and I've seen an awful lot).

As for the link you've provided, any USB WiFi dongle will work.

I'll take a look for a hardware override, will there be any way I could reconnect the wireless switch IIt's stupid hard to remove the back on the vaio the VGA port sticks out couldn't get the back over that port to take it off.
Are there Internet USB dongles the size of wireless mouse usb recievers?

Yes, loads. Just Google 'nano WiFi'. But because they are so small, their antennas are small too. This makes their range a bit poo. I'd take your laptop apart again to see if you can still get the switch into the on position.

I wasn't even able to fully take it apart because of the VGA port no way I could get around it

The switch is designed to turn off power to the wifi card, to support airplane mode and disable all wireless, so you can't just enable wifi with software, both hardware and software have to be on. But you might be able to use a paperclip or toothpick to slide the switch to on position and leave it there.

I'll give it a shot... How do I get the laptop back to lift past the VGA port? The VGA sticks out so much in the casing? Do I have to remove my keyboard and everything to get to it? Because it's Impossible!

Its obviously not impossible, just work it out! I'd recommend taking the keyboard off as there may be some screws under it that hold the top section to the base. Take out every screw you come across noting where it came from, crack the two sections apart, and maybe try opening the sections like they're a book, with the vga port on the 'spine'.
