I have seen a decent price for a MWg UBiQUiO 501 smartphone (HTC-style device running WM6 that's been discontinued) and am wondering if I can use the sim from my 3 mobile broadband USB dongle in this phone without problems?

I can't find much about compatible handsets on 3's site. As it's a HSDPA phone I can't see it being a problem, but I've heard reports in the past about 3 not liking their sims being used in 'non-approved' handsets - no idea how true this is.

Cheers for the help, some wholesome rep will be waiting

Your right about 3 not liking not 3 branded phones, I have a 3 sim in a sim free Nokia N82 and several of the "inclusive" 3 services dont work in it such as their MSN client, however as the N82 is a 3g phone its fine for calls, texts, internet etc so assuming your HTC handset is 3g compatible you should be ok for stuff like that.

Cheers - have you had any notices from 3 about using your sim in another handset? Saying that their MSN client doesn't work - what happened when you tried it? Have you tried any 3rd party IM apps? Not sure what you have running on your Symbian Nokia but there's plenty of portable IM apps available for Windows Mobile along with pocket Skype which I hope will work.

No i havent had any contact from 3 about using a non 3 handset although they do know im using it as once their CS people referred to it when I rang about something.

The MSN client that comes as part of the free 3 msn service wont download on to the handset, it gives an error message saying its not available on non 3 handsets, previously downloaded fine on to a 3 branded N73.

Same applies to slingbox mobile where I had to pay for the software rather than being able to download it for free on 3.

I have been using Agile Messenger as an alternative msn client which works fine......
