Wimbledon Tennis, no English men for the 1st time in its 133 year history

I thought Tim Henman and Andy were supposed to be the saviour of our tennis and because of them, hundreds of kids are going into playing tennis.
Our(British) number 2 tennis player i believe has gone out in round 1 for the last 4 years at wimbledon, and this year he hasnt even qualified.
    Sad sad sad

    Has Fred Perry retired then?:?

Hundreds of kids are going into tennis but that doesn't make them talented.

Tournament is to showcase the best tennis players in the World, if none of them are English then so be it.

    Alex Bogdanovic

    Nice English name there.

Well if the Henman influence was going to impact the sport in this country (if at all) then we won't start seeing it for a few years yet.

Sport is very popular amongst the kids at my local gym.

Give Henman some credit. He reached the semi finals 4 times, quarter finals a further 4 times.

Indeed he did, but Murray has already surpassed his achievements at a far younger age.

Murray doesn't get the same support because of his nationality and of course 'that' Daily Mail article that was reported out of context that so many English folk can't get over.

His personality doesn't exactly endear himself to the general public either.

Our number two usually gets a wildcard into wimbledon but this year he didnt because he didnt want to play Davis Cup anymore so they punished him... Theres me thinking its an individual sport...

My best mate Josh Goodall unfortunately lost in the 2nd round of qualifying despite being a break up in the 2nd!!!. So annoying. Hes had tough draws everytime he qualified. (played Fernando Lopez a few years back who knocked Henman out the next round :(.

My personal experience is were not performing well enough because the LTA are a bunch of Arrogant muppets. The only reason Murray is where he is, is because his mum (who happened to be a big cheese in the LTA, pumped all of LTA's money into him so he got an unfair advantage over the competition.

Its a shame but thats the way it is at the moment

Not at Wimbledon he hasn't (yet)

I'd say the Mail article was more of a hinderance of his support than his nationality. His support at Wimbledon increased noticably after/during his win over Gasquet.

Actually I think he was punished for being gifted a wildcard for 7 or 8 years without a single win to show for it, which trousered him about 70-80k.

    Bogdanovic is Serbian anyway :P

    They've both reached the semis...

Bit like the Arsenal football team then :?

Exactly. So Murray hasn't surpassed Henmans achievements at Wimbledon, and he doesn't tend to last longer than him. Hope he goes at least 1 step further this year though.

Maybe we can get some decent coverage this year without hours of listening to the commentators trying to talk about every British player who scraped in.

in before Stain claims Murray is Nigerian.

I never said anything specifically about Wimbledon, I was talking about overall, he has surpassed Henman.

I hope the Scots don't mind when all of England starts selling ABS t-shirts for the tennis. Anyone But Scotland :whistling:

The problem with UK tennis is at Grassroots level. It has been for years not enough development in the right areas, too much red tape and poor management.

It's not limited to tennis either, it's all the sports, football in particular has a problem.

In reality, Henman has had the most successful career yet. Its by virue of Murray winning all the ATP ranking tournaments that he's scraped in to the US final twice. Henman came acropper to Sampras in his prime and Ivanesavic when he was destined to win.

Henman, as despicable he was, could play tennis on the big stage.

    Actually no not really.
the issue with football is the further development of the talented players and some of the rules put in by the FA. the problem with tennis is far more deep seeded than that in the earlier development stages.

Wrong on many levels I'm afraid. Winning ATP tournaments does not scrape you into any final, let alone the US Open final (which he reached once). He had to beat Del Potro and Nadal to get there for a start.

Murray has already had a more successful career based on highest ranking, slam finals, masters titles etc.

Henman could not play the big points on the big stage, that and the rain in his SF vs Ivanisevic stopped him getting to a slam final.

Other than that, your post was spot on.
