Win a digital SLR camera worth £500 @ The Guardian

The Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera is easy to use and allows you to record HD movie clips with sound.

The unspoilt island of St Helena in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean is the destination of barely 2,000 visitors each year – so those who do make the five-day journey from Cape Town can be sure that their holiday pictures will be all the more exclusive. And there's no shortage of inspiration – from Longwood House, Napoleon's home in exile, and his tomb in the tranquil Sane valley, to the deep green folds of Diana's Peak national park and some stunning seascapes from atop the cliffs.

Of course, you don't have to go to St Helena to take top-class photographs; even a walk in the park will yield plenty of potential subjects. To give you the perfect start, the Guardian has teamed up with St Helena Tourism to offer one lucky reader the chance to own a superb Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera.

The choice of professional photographers, a digital SLR combines the ease of use of a compact digital with the versatility of interchangeable lenses and an almost infinite choice of manual settings. The Nikon D5000 comes with 18-55mm VR lens kit and a 12.3 megapixel DX format image sensor to capture superb still images, and also allows you to record HD movie clips with sound.

If you're not lucky enough to win the top prize, then a taste of St Helena could be yours instead. Three runners-up will receive presentation packs from the tiny St Helena Distillery, tucked away in a basement in the island's Georgian-inspired capital, Jamestown.

Surprise your palate with the unusual taste of Tungi (pronounced "Toon-jee"), a spirit distilled from two varieties of the local prickly pear, handpicked from the surrounding hillsides. Even the design of the bottle is evocative of St Helena, inspired by the 699 steps of Jacob's Ladder which stretches vertiginously from Jamestown to the top of the cliffs.

Try the White Lion spiced rum, a homage to the favoured liquor of 17th-century sailors, which blends white rum with spices from the Orient. Or, for something sweeter, settle down after dinner to savour a glass of Midnight Mist, a smooth rum-based liqueur made from island-grown coffee. It may be the taste that inspires that trip to St Helena!
