Win a pair of wristwarmers from BAKKA, a newly established Fair Isle knitwear business @ Shetland

This pair of wristwarmers (worth £65) is offered by BAKKA as our October competition prize. (approximate size: 19.5cm long, 18cm circumference unstretched).

BAKKA is a newly established Fair Isle knitwear business in the Shetland Isles whose aim is to promote, and thus help preserve, the tradition and heritage of this uniquely Shetland product. The designs have all been inspired from the oldest garments in the collections in the Museums of Shetland and Edinburgh. BAKKA only uses traditional patterns and colours.

These blue and white wristwarmers are part of the family of a style inspired by a curious hat which is held in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Some of the motifs in the style are reminiscent of religious symbols, and the Fair Isle women who first knitted these motifs may themselves have been inspired by shapes and designs from relics that survived from the shipwreck of the Armada flagship 'El Gran Grifon' in 1588.

The blue was obtained from indigo or woad, and the white is the natural colour of some Shetland sheep. The wristwarmers were knitted on an industrial Shima Seiki machine using the tubular jacquard technique (which is called double kntting when knitting by hand).

The yarn used by BAKKA is produced in Italy by Zegna Baruffa Lane Borgosesia SpA. It is 100% extra-fine merino yarn. A team from Zegna Baruffa travel to Australia and choose their Merino wool on the hoof. It is processed in Italy using first-class skills and advanced innovative technology. The resulting yarn is as shiny as silk, as soft as cashmere, and enables a knitted product which is soft, light and warm: a true delight to wear.

BAKKA creations are a work of art, a statement, a celebration of traditional Fair Isle knitwear.

Question:
