Your dad? How old are you?

Is it set in bios to boot from the internal hard disc?

haha it sounds like the master boot record is stored on the external

Did you install the boot loader (GRUB) onto the same drive as your windows xp

Do you have the Windows XP CD?

If you have the Windows disk and urgently need it back, boot from it and go to 'recovery console'. Type 'FIXBOOT' and press enter. It should now boot windows.

To get Ubuntu running from your external drive will probably take a bit of research. Search around on ubuntuforums.org.

Thanks For the help i am formating my Hdd now and re installing windows so dont warry

 Ah well.

If you want to install ubuntu, best thing is to install Windows then let the Ubuntu partition manager use about 10GB or so for Ubuntu. This is enough for all the apps you are likely to use etc. Then you can set up a home directory on the external drive if you want, or just use the external drive to store all the media (remember Ubuntu can mount an NTFS or FAT (Windows) partition no problem...

it can do that no problem but still wont connect to my wireless network. jackmiller, if your going to have another go at installing ubuntu this tread should help ]LINK
