Win XP - Windows Update advice please!!!

I have set Windows automatic updates to "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them". I know that if there was a windows update icon in sys tray I can select "custom install" and see what updates are being installed. BUT the problem in my case is that there is no icon in sys tray and every time I shut down the computer I am presented with the option to install updates but there is no way of knowing what updates I am installing. Is there any way of knowing what updates windows has downloaded and trying to install? Any default windows folder where I can look to ind out whats downloaded?

I select "Turn off without installing updates" but there must be a way of knowing whats going to be installed.

it'll just be installing the updates that you have already downloaded

isn't that to download further updates though, which will more than likely add to the amount of updates that need installing when the pc is shut down

I guess thats the case. Actually I am on SP2 now and don't want to update SP3. I suspect thats what windows is trying to do at the mo. There are different sets of updates for SP2 and SP3. I want all updates for SP2 to be installed and discard updating to SP3 which I guess windows is trying to update to. I am saying this because when I try web update, the first option I am presented with is SP3 but web update doesn;t have the option to discard / hide updates.

go to the windows update site with IE, pick custom and find the sp3 update and select it and stop it from ever installing

Had installed SP3 earlier but slowed down my computer and took a lot of space. I have a 80GB HDD with ~20GB for C:\. SP3 almost ate up 80% of space.

is the reason you don't want to install updates because you believe that there is an sp3 waiting to be installed.

would a system restore to date where you hadn't downloaded the updates work :?:

Did that already but no icon appears on sys tray and when it comes to shut down stage it asks me to install the update. May be its not the SP3 but there's no way of knowing.

You can manually select which updates to download/not download, and set to never ask again.

Thats only when you go through the windows update icon from system tray. The problem is there is no such icon there and I am only presented with the option while shutting down the computer. This option doesn't exist in web update.
