Windows 10 - Due for release March /April last I heard . Hanging off buying a new Laptop till then , anyone got any newer info ?

Thinking of buying a mid range Laptop - I5/ I7 -not bothered about gaming graphics and performance . Last I heard Win 10 due for release Spring . Also hoping by then SSDs may be available at not too much of a premium . How many spinning discs have they got left ?. Just wondered if anyone has any up to date info ?

I wouldn't personally wait for purchasing a laptop to coincide with a new windows as it will likely be rather buggy for the first month or to at least..

also win10 is going to be rather different from previous iterations, make sure you like the path Microsoft are going with it before waiting

I would agree , but couldn't be any worse than 8 and according to leaks ,combines the best bits of 7 and 8 whilst not having the annoyances and phone/ touchscreen oriented annoyances of 8 - we shall see (_;)

You will probably be able to buy Windows 10 separately in October, and then it will probably be available to purchase on laptops a bit after that, once they have cleared their Windows 8 stock. History suggests this is what is most likely to happen. See below...

Thanks for the helpful , intelligent reply and link , thankfully not all HUKD members are dumbos - just 4 at the last count :(. Looks like its slipped to June ish now ,have to see how mine gets on (only crashing twice a day at the moment !).

As a rule updating to the latest windows causes problems especially if you use your laptop to work at home. Software always has compatibility issues. Windows 8 didn't have Java for a while which caused all kinds of problems in the early stages

Hopefully it will be released for sale for £15 like windows 8 at launch.

I don't think I'd want it straight away as there are always bugs , but it does seem microsoft have listened to the consumer this time . Unfortunately Win 8 was brought out in a rush largely to help the sales of Windows Smartphones .:(

    You're welcome.

Windows 8.1 is a great OS, regardless of what anyone says. It's fast and secure. So if you need a new laptop, then just get one. Don't wait a whole year for the next version. You can always upgrade to Windows 10 later, if you want to.

Windows 7 was a 'free' upgrade from Dell when I bought a vista desktop back in the day, but I had to pay £15 postage!

Then windows 8 was £15 as an 'upgrade' on launch so I grabbed on to put on a laptop running XP and hated it until I downloaded classic shell then it was a real upgrade.

Why is the next one called windows 10 anyway???

Apparently it was 9 ,then they made so many "improvements !" they decided it would be 10 - Apparently

As an amateur (who has avoided windows 8 due to the bad reviews) I am willing to concede it appeared to be much better than 7 (which I use ) . But it wasn't user friendly and not a natural progression as previous upgrades were . Just hoping this one will be better .

It's your choice, but it's really not hard to use at all. Most people who think Windows 8/8.1 is crap, are just saying it as they think it sounds 'cool' to hate it - even though they have never used the OS themselves. If you actually look at Windows 10 itself, it's very similar and actually based on the design of Windows 8.1.

So if you think Windows 10 is going to be a massive improvement, it won't be. It will probably be better, but it's not worth not having a working laptop for a year.

Must admit I'm beginning to believe 8.1 isn't too bad (from reading the more learned comments on here ) . o I did what any bloke would do - bought the Girlfriend one for Xmas (Laptop with 8.1) . No screams or howls so far (with the Laptop) ! So she'll be able to teach me how to transit seamlessly when I get a new one .
