    Windows 7

My copy of Windows 7 is on its way. Its in the back of a van atm and was wondering is everyone installing 32 or 64 bit Windows?

I know all about the ram thing but is 64 bit the way to go now or should i stick to 32? Its my new home pc, will use it for net, games, music, video, standard stuff really.

What WONT I be able to do with a 64 bit Windows that i could do before?

I've ordered the 64bit one so I can upgrade to 8gig ram, the basic difference is that it should run a bit smoother as it can handle more bits of data at a time.

I asked this on another thread the other day, the consensus seemed to be that besides the obvious ram usage, the x64 runs a bit faster and smoother.

64bit all the way - I installed and everything works fine - and amazingly fast

Most of the software you will use will be 32bit meaning they wont run any faster. But still the software might see a 64bit upgrade in the future and then it will be worth it.

    Basic pros and cons

    * You can address much more than 4GB of memory, which is ideal for avid gamers, CAD, video editors and heavy multi-taskers. However, any 32 bit software you use will still be restricted to 4GB memory – you need a 64 bit CPU, OS and applications to take full advantage of the extra RAM.

    * 16 bit applications will no longer run. Although this is unlikely to be a problem, if you use very old software (from the Windows 3.1 days!) then it will not work under a 64 bit OS.

    * Existing 32 bit drivers no longer work.If you have older or poorly supported hardware you may find that it can no longer be used. Got a 7 year old scanner that just about works in Vista? You may not be able to get it working in 64 bit Windows 7.

    * Unsigned kernel-mode drivers no longer work. Along with the issue above, the inability to run unsigned kernel mode drivers will cause problems for old hardware. (There is reportedly a way to bypass this check).

    * Running some 32 bit applications on a 64 bit OS could actually be slower. The additional overheads in running 32 bit software in 64 bit mode could cause a slight degradation in performance. It will take some time for 64 bit software to become the norm.

I pre-ordered the home version which i presume is the 32bit, but now i want 64bit

Was dispatched yesterday from amazon, says in transit so should be delivered today, also the new pc isn't built yet but will be an i5 750, so 64 bit capable.

Anyone know where i can get the 64bit from nice and cheap?

    If your a student yes

correct - it does although seems to install both versions if you opt for 64bit:thumbsup:

I have two PROGRAM FILES folders

    Program Files (x86)

causing confusion already - I;m guessing 32bit software goes in the first and 64 in the second. Hardly anything in the first one suggesting most have 64bit version of software now

It just installs one version. Not sure if you get to select which one but it doesnt install both at the same time.

If you install the 64bit version it makes 2 program files folders, 64bit apps install to the first one and 32bit (or x86) apps get installed into the second folder.

I've got the 64bit Home edition as the Pro edition is a little too much money for me.

The student pre-order £30 offer, can teachers get it at this price? i cant find a link but know 2 teachers, although haven't spoke to either for a few weeks, but if needs must i can make the effort :whistling:

Yeah, just need a .ac.uk email address. You could try phoning the Uni and seeing if they will reactivate your old one temporarily. I abused my girlfriends student email address and got 64bit Professional for £30 and opted for the backup DVD as well for an extra £9.

Also, I have just finished my i5 750 build. mATX, 5770, 4gb (gonna get more in time), velociraptor. It goes like the clappers.

It's refreshing to hear your i5 is fast, my pc isn't slow and i keep questioning myself why i bothered, but after hearing that, i'm glad even though i'm nowhere near finished yet What ram do you have in yours mate?

having installed the 64bit home edition, I cant see any value in the pro version unless you need XP compatibilty. As I said, all my drivers & programs run perfectly on 64bit

Come on, you must know somebody who's brother or sister is still at uni. All they have to do is forward you a couple of emails. First one is the receipt, second one is the licence key and link to download. Actually, I can probably give you the link to the 64 bit Professional version and you can get it downloaded while you find someone!

After a lot of thinking, i only know my mates daughter is at college, but she's a computer novice so asking her to setup an email will be rocket science to her :giggle:

The only other option is either of the 2 teachers i know, but wont after not speaking to them for about 5 weeks i dont what to ask them a favour as it's rude :whistling:

I don't think it's unique to me as it's just a download manager and I wasn't required to login or anything. Hell, you might even be able to install without the product code. I did it with Vista the other day in the custom installation (it wouldn't accept mine because I didn't have XP on the machine already and it was supposed to be an upgrade only).

    Thanks for that mate
