Windows 8.1 - do you need anti virus software?

Hello I have heard that windows 8 has defender built in?

Do you need additional anti virus software as well?

Or will that built in defender work?

    Thanks

Built in defender is more than enough. The reason why older operating systems were so vulnerable was due to the easy access of the file system. Now an application cannot change a system file without permission making it allow more secure. I have had windows 8 for 2years+ now and had no problems with windows defender

So you have NOTHING else install on other anti virus software?

Do you install all the windows updates that comes? Or do you hide hem?

I have no anti virus except for the built in one, you get a little flag in the system tray when it needs updating btw.

Updates are set to automatic and do themselfs when i turn my system off when available

Yes you need Antivirus, Defender is only for initial protection until you install a real AV.

    False.

It's enough if you want to get a virus, otherwise it isnt, It fails miserably.

Running an outdated OS, without a firewall, going to websites no one trusts, are ways to get a virus.

you need anti virus software. would also say get your self ADD blocker to block popups and adds on websites.

AVG if free to use and one of the best free anti virus software.

mcafee antivirus (cost £££) one pick by most big businesses to use not sure why tho.

Just doing some basic research on the subject on google should be enough to tell you that bit defender alone is inadequate security.
If you believe its fine then fair enough but I'm afraid I'm not quite as trusting...some might say naive.
And by the way I am running windows8 ..nothing outdated.

I've been without an Anti Virus for 4 years. I scan regularly to see if anything has infected my system. Still nothing.

how can you scan to see. if you don't have a anti virus? windows defender does not check like the way a anti virus software would.

Unless you on a mac then no anti virus software needed.

ESET's online scanner, and I have other tools that don't run in real-time (just for scanning manually).

yes you need av! think of it like insurance. you may never need it but if you don't have it expect your world to come crashing at some point in the future!

I have Defender and Windows FW disabled and no other AV or FW installed, haven't used AV or FW's for nearly 10 years on PC's and have had 2 minor virus' in that time.

I use Malwarebytes to scan once a week and CCleaner every few days to clear out rubbish and check and fix the registry if needed.

Unless you are going on dodgy sites/downloading dodgy stuff/or opening those flagged emails in your spam box then you shouldn't, IMHO, need antivirus etc, I find it a pain and a waste of resources.

If you are downloading torrents or similar then join a reputable site

I run Linux at home so no problem there but even with the best safety practices you can still get a virus in windows 8.1 and that is why you need AV. If you don't care about getting a virus then that is fine but recommending to other people not to use AV software is not.

    Thanks to everyone replying,

Do you ^^ and everyone else install those pesky "Windows Updates"? or can I simply hide them?

    Thanks

I think I will just use Windows Defender and Nothing else

I've used the built in defender and no problems. clean as a whistle.

I can suggest whatever I want from my own personal experience. The person didn't ask if it's ok to be completely unprotected, but is Defender enough, which it is.

Sure you can but that doesnt make it right. Saying "I've never got a Virus so you don't need Antivirus" is just like saying "I've never caught an STD so you dont need to use a condom" Both are very poor advice without any foundation in reality.

Yes, it's always best to compare sexually transmitted diseases with OS security. Very good.

yes windows updates are a must these update the built in anti-virus mechanisms.

those installing third party anti-virus software in doing so disable microsofts internal built-in anti-virus. totally nuts lol! who knows best the creaters of windows or some third party second guessing the workings of w8.1

Some third party because they don't have to be experts on the working of Windows specifically, they need to be experts in detecting and eliminating Viruses.

I personally use Kaspersky on all my windows machines, mainly because it comes free with barclays bank. otherwise I would be using avast free.

Keeping security holes patched is the absolute first line of defence. Anti-virus is there primarily to catch the ones that fall through.

Set updates to automatic if you don't want them bothering you but you definitely need to install them.

The same old arguments time and time again

    Here's the facts

Yes Microsoft Security Essentials / Windows Defender are not the best protection/AV's as tested in scientific conditions

If the end user is competent and knows which sites to use to download (doesn't use torrents etc) then there is zero need for any AV

If the end user has no understanding and downloads from anywhere (or from torrents) then they will need a good AV/protection

If the user was computer literate and used the right software and still wanted to download anything then they still could even without an AV (Deep Freeze , making OS portable, making OS virtual etc etc )

Torrents that contain .exe's sure, most people use them for media, which doesn't need any protection.
