I recently upgraded to 8.1 and now i cant stream my laptop to the TV. Well i say that, i can but all i can see is the mouse cursor on a black background on the TV. Any ideas?

Is it casting to a second screen in the display settings rather than just duplicating your desktop to the external monitor? Sounds to possibly be the most likely reason.

pass. can you tell me how you would set it up please?

Sorry, cant help there, I refuse to use W8 as it's awful. Similar reason I don't plan to buy an Xbox1 as Microsoft have stopped making stuff that meets consumer needs and only for their own pockets to try to force the market.

Windows knowledge base seems to suggest the following;

After you've plugged in your second monitor or connected a projector, you can choose your screen options.

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Devices.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Devices.)

Tap or click Project, then choose one of these options:

PC screen only. You'll see everything on your PC. (When you're connected to a wireless projector, this option changes to Disconnect.)

Duplicate. You'll see the same things on both screens.

Extend. You'll see everything spread over both screens and you can drag and move items between the two.

Second screen only. You'll see everything on the connected screen. Your other screen will be blank.
