windows security update will not install

    Hi
My partners old laptop keeps getting stuck with a update.
    He is running Vista.
When I look at windows updates it seems to be one called security update for microsoft visual C 2005 service pack.
It wants to install it but wont even go to 1% of install just stays at 0. It will do this for hours.
Does anyone have any ideas? Whenever we try to shut his computer down it says there is 1 update to install. Hours later it is just doing the same.
Any ideas would be appreciated. We are in the process of getting him a new laptop but I would still like the kids to use this for homework etc so would like to sort the problem out.
    Thanks in advance.

I have had similar problems... If you go to updates and just tick to install one of the updates at a time instead of a block of updates it did the trick for me. Also check that you are logged in as an administrator when you do this...

Thanks xmal but I have tried that. Also he is the administrator. Its getting stuck with this every time I try to shut it down. As its an old laptop I am thinking of telling it not to look for updates but just check every so often manually and ignore this one. When it isnt trying to update the laptop seems to be working for what he wants which is internet browsing and word.
    Thanks for advice though.

Had similar trouble with Windows 7, Install other updates first, Un-tick the visual C 2005 update.

Mines been doing the same for the past few days, 4 updates in total. I can't be arsed to do them manually, but when I do, thanks for the heads up shauneco.

I use win 7 and recently had an update for service pack1 originally i had automatic updates ticked which caused no end of problems as it wouldnt update but at the end of every session would try to..After nearly 2 hours of speaking to microsoft help they said unless i uninstalled my virus checker(norton) which i did and then reinstalled. It then seemed to update fine. They said i shouldnt tick the automatic update box and now manually check updates every 3-4 days.
    Hope this helps.

My girlfriend had a similar problem with Vista. To make things worse, Windows Update was using a massive amount of memory trying to download this one update and it slowed the whole computer down. Had to turn automatic updates off and I think the stubborn update is still waiting to be downloaded to this day!

Look at the details for the update and get the KB (Knowledge Base) number for it. Will be something like KB90813 or similar.

Go to microsoft.com and search for that KB number and try to manually install the update.

Thank you for all your answers. I kept trying it and each time I shut down it is trying to install the same one which it says is important. I don't however think he uses visual c which i think is more to do with presentation. As he only uses the internet and word I don't think it will matter.
Updates seem to be a bit of a problem at the moment. He has space in his memory, and I run CCleaner regularly for him. It has also been defragged recently so I am putting it down to old age...
To stop it constantly trying to update I have turned the updates off automatic. Now it will check what the updates are and let me know. I can then chose which I want and I am leaving that one unticked.
I have turned it on and off and the problem seems to have sorted itself out. It may not be a perfect solution but its working.
Thank you for all your answers. It's actually quite nice to know its not just us who constantly have problems.
