What are the advantages of using Windows SB server 2003 against a machine acting as a server using xp pro ?
The machine will really only be used for pushing e-mails around and making a backup once a week.
What features would I get with the Server that might get used in the future.

The company I work for has 7 office staff and no real applications that need networked.

Thanks in advance

It really depends.

When you say pushing emails around what do you mean?

The SBS server will give you Exchange ie Mailbox, Calendar etc integration.
It will give you
centralised faxing.

It really boils down to money and what you want from it. If you want to discuss then PM me with your requirements.

safehands, you do not need to put your whole reply in a second time.

You can go back and edit the first reply and add the text to that.

mrtootough,

your subject line says "Windows server" and your text says "Windows SB Server 2003". They are two different things.

Windows Server 2003 is a "server" version of Windows (based on Windows XP code) that is used to sit at the centre of a network. It has no extra applications over and above Windows itself.

Windows Small Business Server 2003 is a set of bundled products which include Windows Server 2003, plus Exchange Server (e-mail), SQL Server (database) and other applications.

It is not clear which of the two you are refering to.

Normally with Windows Server you run a network "domain" where Windows Server sits at the centre of that domain, and each user "logs on" to that domain and shares network resourses such as printers, hard drives and so on.

Microsoft have loads of web pages that can help you, search their site.

Examples:

microsoft.com/win…spx

microsoft.com/win…spx

You may fnd this tutorial useful, there are loads of pointers to things to download. Click on the arrow in the bottom right to step through it.

thanks for the replies. Guess I would be needing the small business server as a back up of the e-mails would be handy. What exactly can I do with an SQL database ?
