If its a new PC, windows Vista home premium has media center included on it. You can buy oem versions from ebuyer or Amazon fairly cheap

Yes, but i don't want Vista - i want xp so that all my software and printers/scanners work as they do now without any problems - i decided on media centre xp.

Media center isn't meant to be for sale, its meant to purely come with a pre-built machine so be careful where you but it from.

    Google products brings up:
    redstore.com/MIC…0LT

    at 66 quid.

    Hi ,
Thanks for that - haven't got/built it yet but i did want that installed on it .
I have a copy of xp home that is installed on this computer- i guess i wont be able to install in on a new one?

Are you asking if you can or is it legal?

You wont be able to turn xp home into media center without the cost. But legally you can install xp home on your new pc so long as you dont have it installed on your old pc at the same - should work mind.

yes, its installed on the pc i am using now- i am donating this one to charity so i guess they will have to have the disc too if i cannot install it on the new computer as well !
Thats why i wanted to buy xp media centre to put on my new pc !!

This is the biggest pain with MCE. I currently have it on my computer and it really needs fixing but you need the disks to do it which a) didnt come with the computer as seems the norm these days and b) its near on immpossible to find a copy of it on disk any where.

I do have a vista upgrade disk but currently want to wait for it to go beta. Bit of a poor choice by microsoft not releasing MCE properly!

If you have a licensed serial then I believe you can download it and it will stand up in court - not that it is likely to be even noted but just to bring that to your attention.

Hang on a sec, as I understand it the Windows XP media center edition you are after, is the program that is included with Vista. Whatever programs you are hoping to run with the old 2005 version of Windows Media Center, will still work in the Vista version as this is the same platform. The only problem Vista has is with the drivers for the hardware (not software) you may have installed in your computer. As you mentioned this is a new PC being built for you, I would hope in your NEW PC you are having NEW parts used to build it. Since Vista's release in January this year all manufacturers of NEW hardware ensure it is Vista compatible. If you have some old programs that work in XP but not Vista, which I'm fairly certain won't be many, if they do not work in XP Media Center, they also will not work in Vista Media Center as it is the same platform, and vice versa

I wouldn't wish Vista on my worst enemy. XP's a much better choice for many many reasons.
