Please help an inept computer user:

I have two laptops, both of which can detect wireless connections, therefore, I assume they are wireless. Please forgive me if I haave stated the obvious, I am relatively new to this 'wireless' world we live in.

Anyway, i am looking to buy a wireless router to link both laptops up to. Although I do not know what to ask for and when I have gone to Maplins/PC World/et al, they have just blinded me with science and to be honest made the situation a whole lot worse for me!!!!!!!!!

I would be very grateful, if someone with knowledge of these things has or knows of a simple solution to my problems and would be willing to note them down and share them with me.

Thanks for all your help in advance,

First of all how do you get your internet connection?

Is it down your BT line or through Cable or NTL?

We get internet connection through a regular broadband connection on a BT line. Does this mean we need to get not only a wireless modem but also a card?

If your laptops are detecting wireless connections they are all set for wireless, just need the wireless router/modem now.

This is how it works for me , connect the high speed modem (either cable or dsl) to a wireless router I have a D LInk wireless G router with 4 ports this is probably all you need and is not very expensive - then you need to configure your lappys to connect to the router and make the connection secure

Also bear in mind when configuring and securing your wireless network, make sure you opt for WPA rather than the older, much weaker WEP protocol.…spx

Im sure someone will be able to talk you through it if you get stuck.
