Wireless Broadband/Router Help; Desktop PC

Found 29th Nov 2010
I need some help in choosing a wireless card for my PC. We had the pc in the front room, but have had to move it into the back/spare room during winter.

Now, the currently modem cable don't reach. Virgin have sent me a wireless router, thinking I have a laptop, but since I only have a Desktop PC, i need to purchase a Wireless Card.

Any ideas which one I need/is best

depends on the wireless router you have, is it the one on this … depends on the wireless router you have, is it the one on this page:http://shop.virginmedia.com/broadband/broadband-extras/wireless-routers.html

yea, possibly (im not at home so cant' check but im sure its black)

well if it is, then the fastest one you can get is type N (theres 3 main different types for different speeds which goes B,G,N) - N is the fastest

search for a USB one like dontasciime suggested above, in fact their one looks like a good deal.

found this amazon one for £9.50 has a review from a virgin media user too,

FYI, i was trying to make life easier for disco by finding one thats guaranteed compatible with his router (which does matter). i personally have a netgear wireless router, and my computer with a belkin wireless card refuses to connect to it despite them both having the same standards, latest drivers, etc.

^ using which security protocol

currently using WPA+WPA2 mode (WSK) but i have tried WPA and WEP too.
tried connecting via belkin's program as well as trying without it and using xp's built in one.
its definitely not signal as the wii and my mobile connects fine from the same position.
tried different channels.
i gave up on it, but am open to any new ideas lol

router model number and the belkin part number ?

Netgear DG834G ver 5
Belkin F5D7010 ver 1314uk

Is the dg834g using the latest firmware ? 1.6.01.34 (if not read how to update firmware in router and read about how to fix things if the firmware update does not go smoothly) might be easier to just buy a usb dongle

use DHCP and set auto ip in xp ip config

and is the pcmcia using driver APCMCIAFIRSTHW / bcmwl5.sys / PCMCIAbcmwl5.inf

driverVer=07/17/2003, 3.30.15.0 (belkins v1000 driver for F5D7010

Seems to be no vista/w7 driver on belkins main page

try with wep and b only in router and card config and see if you can connect use wep without a Zero in key use this WEP key fce2647381 (10 digits) (64bit) and OPEN in xp config wireless bit ... also try SHARED ... do not auto generate a wep key phrase (also make sure in router where you enter wep key you do not enter teh wep key into the generate key1 box (it's quite easy to do on some routers)... also make sure you untick 802.11x

lol you might have a point there, i've only got a netgear one now because the belkin router i had kept acting up.

THANK YOU! That actually worked (the firmware/drivers/dhcp was all okay). Guess I'll have to stick to WEP and hope no-one's adventurous enough to try and hack it around my area.
