    Wireless Connection

Hi - Can someone provide me with some advice plse. I currently have a wireless router from Orange that is actually wired to my PC via an ethernet cable. I'm not actually sure if I am Wireless or not so wanted to try it out. I thought all I had to do was disconnect the ethernet cable from the pc but when i tried to log on to the internet I got a message saying that the ethernet cable was disconnected. How do I prove / enable my wireless connection please? Thanks

Have you got a wireless card built in or have you bought one and put it in the
    USB slot?

Hi - wireless card is built in to PC. (At least I think it is). I'm sure when i 1st set it up I plugged the router in to the downstairs phone socket and the pc connected fine upstairs.

right click on the internet connect symbol, choose connect to network, if its wireless your router should come up

What's the Internet connect symbol look like?

Is that in Control Panel? I can see an icon that has a computer with a red tick on the screen and a globe behind it. It's called 'Internet options'

    Try

Control panel> Network and internet>network and sharing centre

You should be able to view wireless networks

It wouldn't have a globe as you would be connected!:)

Ok I can see Control panel - Network and internet but I don't have an option called network and sharing centre?

If you're using Windows XP inside network and internet connections at the bottom you should see internet options on one side and network connections on the other. Go into network connections and report what you have in there.

Hi - In the LAN or High Speed Internet Section it reads 'Connected NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking and when i click on it it say's Connected and Speed 100MBPS.

How can I find out if i have a wireless card built in to my PC? I have a feeling that is why it doesn't work when i disconnect the ethernet lead. If I had the on board wireless card would the internet still connect once I unconnected the Ethernet lead?

    Thanks

you probably wont have built-in wireless unless its a laptop

why switch anyway? Wired is much better

If there was wireless installed it would show in network connections as another adapter mate. Doesn't look like you have it unfortunately.

If you're desperate to have wireless I've seen a few USB wireless adapters go on here recently for the £10 odd mark.

Thanks to you both for the quick response. Daft question but if I buy a laptop now will it pick up my wireless connection from my wired PC?

I have a nintendo Wii, would I be able to connect to that via the wireless router to play on line games etc etc?

Yes - The Wii is able to connect either by a wireless or wired connection (as well as DS's as well). You really should set up your wireless network to be secure:

    - Set up a non-standard SSID
    - Dont Broadcast it
    - Configure security (i.e. WEP preshared key)
    - For best security also apply MAC access lists to allow only your devices to access via the wireless network

All of the above can normally be configured via the web interface on your router - of course all of the devices using the wireless network will need to match in terms of settings

    Good Luck

Don't use WEP, it's an old security protocol that's no longer secure. Use WPA2 instead.

if you are nailing down access by MAC address it would have to be a VERY determined hacker to gain access by cracking WEP key and also spoofing MAC address. The OP would need to ensure that all of their devices support the selected encryption protocol be it WEP/WPA2 etc etc

So many standard 'open' AP's out there it is crazy!
