wireless help

hi everyone,

i know theres a few techies hanging about here and i was wondering if anyone can help me...

I have a wireless set up in my flat, Ive got a orange livebox and a laptop with a belkin wireless adaptor.

My wireless works when im in the same room as the livebox but when i move into another room it wont connect, it just keeps trying over and over again even tho it says it has full signal.

There are other strong signals in the area, maybe these are interfereing?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Can you change it to another channel? It would also help if you could post model numbers of your router/AP and wireless adaptors.

any idea how to stop it re-connecting every 10 mins?

Change DHCP period to 1 hour? Or use static IP.

My mate down south (hehe) has his computer on and feeds off of his next door neighbours wireless feed.

Shhhhhhhhhh

You'd be surprised how many people have their network totally unprotected.

Cheers Kommunist, Ive tried setting a static IP using TCP/IP.

It hasnt re-connected for a few minutes so its looking good!

Im not sure how to change the DHCP Period?

In my router (WRT54GS) there is a setting "Client Lease Time: xxx minutes (0 means one day)". But if you are using static IP, you don't need DHCP at all.

Just a little note for the future - download a little tool called netstumbler. It will tell you which channels are in use by your neighbours at any time so you can avoid the most busy ones.

A little more techie info in terms of finding the optimal channel (forums.whirlpool.net.au/for…l):

Channels 1-5 overlap each other, as do: 2-6, 3-7, 4-8, 5-9, 6-10, … Channels 1-5 overlap each other, as do: 2-6, 3-7, 4-8, 5-9, 6-10, 7-11.Non-overlapping sets: 1-6-11, 2-7, 3-8, 4-9, 5-10.
