Wireless router interference problem please help

My network has always been reasonable till a few days ago when it started being intermittent and really slow. I did a few speedtests and was getting between 0.4 & 1.6 virgin have been out today and gave me a new combined router/modem when wired with Ethernet I get the 10mbs I pay for but everything on wireless is still the same. Laptop was less than a foot away from router and I'm getting nothing. The virgin man has suggested interference. Any ideas?
We don't have a house phone or baby monitors, we have not installed any new technology.

Quite desperate had hardly any net for days and I can't work and I'm supposed to be working from home due to snow. I'm on my phone at mo so please excuse spelling and grammar.

Have you tried changing the channel that it's using?

Have you tried changing the wireless channel on the router settings?

For some reason the laptop in my flat only gets 20-30 Mbps on the wireless N dongle yet my desktop gets the full 50Mbps on the same dongle..

Use the program inSSIDer 2.0 to see what wireless channels your neighbours use and change yours to a different channel to avoid interference with other wireless networks.

He tried switching channel no difference on the new router he said it has an auto which should pick the best channel.
He also plugged my old one in and got up to 4mbps on one of the channels. But that was it. He is coming back tomorrow with another router just trying to figure out what the interfearence could be as it seems common sense to eliminate that if possible

Did as you said and set it to a channel no one else is using...most of my devices seem to be working and getting close to the 10 for now, will check again i the morning. My alu iMac is playing up but they are notorious for that anyway, pity as mine has always been good in the past.
