Wireless Router - Laptop Internet Access - Help !!??!!

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me out, me being the technophobe I am !!

I've recently purchased a laptop and want to get it up and running on the internet. My desktop pc is on Virgin broadband.

Would I be correct in thinking that all I need is a wireless router that plugs into the modem and then I'll automatically get a connection with the laptop?

If so, can anyone recommend what would be the best router to get to work off Virgin broadband please?

If not, can anyone offer advice on the best way to get a connection?

Any help gratefully appreciated - thanks
    Jase

Wireless router correct, but usually Virgin should provide you with a wireless router, Problem trying to use any other wireless, however, it is possible make sure if you are buying that is it does work on Virgin broadband.

give virgin a call they might give you one, if they dont thretan to leave or something.

you can just buy a wireless router, as virgin media is cable, look for a cable wireless router.

There is sometimes some cheap ones in the fs/t section of the website, i bought one for i think a tenner.

Connecting it up is straightforward these days, unless you are going the static ip route but i shouldnt think you will need to worry about that.

Thanks for that. Virgin did say I could get a router from them but it'd be £60 and they suggested I could get one cheaper elsewhere !!

it could cheaper if your not planning to use wireless and just buy a normal router.

And better, wireless is crap even in its 'n' variant. I'm going back to wired as soon as I can be arsed to drill some holes through the walls.
