Wireless Router/Modem?

    Hi

I have just bought a laptop (whenever it gets delivered from Dell :x ). Now, I need to connect the laptop to the world and obviously need a wireless router/modem! Firstly, I don't understand much about computers, wireless, routers/modems etc so please bear with me.

Anyway, here is the background. Currently have a PC with connection to Talk Talk with their ADSL modem. Works fine. Now the questions are:

    1. What router/modem should I go for so that I can use my laptop & PC to connect to the web?
    2. I hope to work in the garden with my laptop & therefore would like connection there as well (I live in a standard 2 storey 3 bed house with my PC in the upstairs room).
    3. Do I need any kind of card/etc in my PC? (The laptop comes with the network card already installed). If so what should I get & roughly how much would it cost?
    4. Lastly, I need to share stuff between PC/laptop & print from laptop wirelessly. Can I do all this with my router/modem?

    Thanks.

Any old ADSL Wireless modem+router should do it but there are other considerations like security, personally I like Zyxel hardware: ]http//ww…521 they come highly recommend. You should look for something with a built in firewall and WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access) support for security (both of which are features of the Zyxel I suggested), I cannot stress enough how important security features like that are to help protect your network and computers.

It's certainly possible just don't be surprised if the signal disappears rapidly as you wander up the garden. Regardless of what hardware you get it mostly depends on the distance from the router to the garden as well as the make up of your walls etc. some routers do have better range performance than others but there is generally not much in it unless you go for a cheap nasty one.

If it's a new laptop then it should have wireless hardware already, but that router I pointed out does come with a usb wireless dongle anyway, so you're covered either way.

I'm assuming they are all Windows based computers? File sharing is not a function of the router but of the PC's themselves (the Operating System to be precise), they need to be set up to allow file sharing. But be careful when doing that as you can easily open up your computer to unscrupulous types. As far as printing Wirelessly goes there are a number of options:

Get a wireless printer like the Cannon MP600R: ]http//ww…351 which would give you a fully wireless solution.

Get a Network enabled printer such as the Cannon MP600: ]http//ww…087 which would plug into the router and be accessible from any computer on the network.

Or share a printer from one of the machines which can be done with any old printer but requires the computer to which it's attached being turned on everytime you need to use the printer.
Hope that helps.

megalomaniac: You are wonderful. Thanks a bunch for a nice detailed reply. I had heard I should go for NetGear stuff but if you swear byZyxel then I will check them out.

It has given me good pointers - now wait for Dell to send me my laptop (hopefully this year sometime) ;-)
