if you can rustle up the cash get a private appointment... its not worth the worry if you can afford it.

If there is any possibility of cancer the GP will refer you to be seen witin 2 weeks as those are the cancer guidelines. The GP can not be expecting you to have cancer and not refer you as such. He/she will write to the consultant with the symptoms in order to be seen, if the consultant expects there is any possibility of cancer he/she will see you within two weeks.
I have had two cancer scares myself and this is how it worked on both occasions.

I would find out how nuch a private consultant would be, I thought it would be hugely expensive. I was told 350 and I would be seen the nxt week. That friday I had a telephone call from the local hosp with a cancellation via the NHS so didnt even need to go for the private one.

Good luck and fingers crossed for you x

he says out of the thousands of patients he has referred with the same symptoms, only one had cancer. seems to be using that as a guideline, but my dad died of cancer, surely i'm vulnrable because of that?

    too late!! googled!!!

    awwwwwwwwww hope everything will be ok x x x x x

I find it hard to believe a GP would say that, but if they did, get a 2nd opinion ASAP and write a letter of complaint about the first GP.

    Hope everything's ok.

I honestly have no idea if cancer of the bladder is hereditary and is only the oncologist that would be able to tell you as it would no doubt depend on what kind of cancer of the bladder it is. I had two scares which both involved the symptoms that my mother and my auntie died from within a year of eachother and another auntie diagnosed with it currently. It is not hereditary and I proved to be in the clear. Admittedly, I will keep a much closer eye on it as other people might.
I would go with the advice of the other person in this thread to go for a second opinion if you really feel you are at risk. You can ask for a copy of the letter that the GP writes to your Consultant to make sure he/she has highlighted the right issues. This might put your mind at ease as the Consultant would then be able to call you in earlier if he/she did feel there might be an issue.
    Good luck.
