Woke up in the middle of the night last night and couldn't breathe

Found 9th Sep 2012
I woke up suddenly in the middle of the night last night and found that I couldn't breathe. I ran out of the bedroom and went to the bathroom (couldn't think of where else to go) and was struggling to catch my breath for about 30 seconds, and afterwards my throat was sore and I had a vile taste in my mouth.

Has this happened to anyone else? I've woken up with a vile taste in my mouth before but just dismissed it. Does anyone know what the hell happened to me?!

I did a quick Google search and found that it can happen during pregnancy - but I'm a non pregnant male!

Dont know about the taste, but the rest could be sleep paralysis maybe.

no I was out
Lurgy
Most likely sleep apnea. I have it sometimes
Panic attack mate. I have a couple every year. I think the taste is bile, stomach acid. Lots of things can trigger them, big meal, spicy food, stress, life changes, being overweight. You have my sympathy but unless you can find the trigger, you might have to live with them.
Was churchill in your room, pulling his trousers up?

Would you like to try?
more than likely a big house spider crawled in you mouth and got lodged in your windpipe then your acid in stomach could have killed it and thats where the taste is from. believe it or not this is very common when where a sleep. http://www.photography.gordonengland.co.uk/photo-gallery2/d/6498-4/house+spider-elmarit-600mm-100crop-9848.JPG

I actually thought it might've been that.

Do you both have the same symptoms as what I had?
Go see your GP.

Will. Never. Sleep. Again

Probably sleep apnoea, which is caused by collapsible walls of soft tissue obstructing breathing during sleep.

Can I ask whether you are physically fit?

Isn't a myth that we consume spiders in our sleep? So the experts say anyway...

Great input there. Really witty and clever. I salute you.

I think the person likely to give you the most accurate diagnosis will be your GP. Probably nothing
to worry about, but I'm sure the reassurance will make you feel better.
Spiders crawling into your mouth whilst you sleep is a myth

Googling symptoms is the worst thing you can do. Always get a diagnosis which says your going to die or something.

See your gp Monday morning op.

Sounds like acid reflux. Make an appt to see your doctor. In the meantime buy over the counter ranitidine and take one in the morning and one an hour before bed. (Sorry for being sensible - I know this isn't the correct place for this....)

Logic should have told you to go to the living room.

In all seriousness it does sound similar to sleep apnea symptoms. My Father in Law and Brother in law both suffer from this and one of them has to use a ventilator to sleep. It's not always serious but well worth checking out. Are you often tired? With sleep apnea you don't get quality sleep so are often left drained even after a full night. Do you snore loudly? This can also be a sign.
Now I know this goes against all common sense options but I would like to say that the Misc can sometimes be a useful place to gather info.

I DO think you should speak to your GP. However the Misc can sometimes provide extra snippets of information that can be useful in reaching a diagnosis or in helping a user know if there is more that they can do to help themselves.

Misc has a wide readership and there may well be someone who posts something particularly useful. Its just important to realise that its best to not take everything as gospel.
It was the Goblin from Stephen King's Cat's Eye.
I had a similar thing once, about five years ago. I woke up at some early time in the morning just unable to breathe. It was a scary experience, although it did pass within a minute or so, and I could breathe again. I don't know what caused it, although it's never happened again.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's worth booking a doctor's appointment for reassurance, but don't panic, as it probably won't kill you.
