Working out distance walked / cycled on a map.

I was thinking of walking / cycling a certain route but the majority of it will be along canal footpaths. It is a fair old way and wondered Is there anyway I can work out the mileage beforehand.
I have tried google maps but it seems to only drag the route to roads and doesn't allow me to drag it along the canal.

Fit your mrs with a pedometer and send her off.

Try RunKeeper. My Nike+ packs up every so often so I know you can manually entered your routes which you cannot do with the Nike software.

Everytrail.com It's superb, I use it for cycling. Gives you MPH, elevation details etc (use with GPS or iPhone).

(Beware of stalkers!)

I like to use wtp2.appspot.com/whe…htm
You can select a number of map options including old ones which help you understand some features and ruined buildings you may encounter.

Whilst Naismith's Rule is a good one, in reality it only really applies when carrying weight, such as a rucksack. Under normal walking & cycling conditions it can be safely ignored.

Rough guide for distance, using an OS map, count the number of grid squares the route passes thru.
This will give estimate in kilometres. Or use a map measurer. But I'm sure there must be more accurate internet methods.

Naismiths needs to be adapted to personal fitness.
