    workplace put CCTV cameras up

Can a workplace put cameras up that are faced towards workers in a factory. I'm not bothered at all myself as everyone knows I'm sat on my phone all day, but alot of people are moaning saying they can't do it.

AFAIK There is no reason they would not be allowed

    We are in the Matrix.

yes they can, but they have to put signs up to say there are cameras operating

there was a kitchen and bathroom manufacturers in south kirby, Yorkshire where the owners put CCTV everywhere in the factory, had it wired to there home and also had a tannoy system to make 'friendly suggestions' to motivate their workforce, the company were well known for having a massive turnover of east European staff.

    Why wouldn't they be?

At least those cameras are obvious, we were demo'd some that were so far away you only saw them when pointed out, but high quality resolution on the screens - i.e. you could clearly make out people / faces.

These days they can do it no issues - there's debates about toilets / changing rooms but some even cover those.

our bosses have put them in work vans concentrating on the driver and every other direction, its for the drivers protection apparently

We have them in the car park and entrance points for security. But none in actual work areas except reception.

they're moaning because there's no signs neither was anyone informed. It's just something people have saw and have kicked up a stink about it

Yes. There is a data protection requirement for the company responsible for the use of the CCTV system to register with ICO or face legal penalty. Example: ico.org.uk/abo…aw/

As far as Im aware the only legal obligation is to put up a sign on the entrance to the site warning of the possibility of overt and convert CCTV cameras in operation.
Oh and just to clarify they can also ban the use of mobiles in the workplace should they so wish.

mine face towards me at work so give them the V sign always.

The company I worked for said they were there to prevent theft and to be used in accidents situations . A few months they were timekeepers for the line managers and people were getting warnings .

I'd feel unnerved with someone sat staring at me all day. I can understand cameras for security (covering stock and goods) but the workforce? Nah, bit weird imo.

We have cctv at one of my jobs , there is a sign outside the building advising that they are there. To be honest I've spent the last 30 years working in a job where we have cctv, trust me after a while you really won't even remember they are there . Also a fair proportion of companies will have theirs set up to record , but won't even be looked at unless there is a problem.

    they are currently prohibited

Yes they can, but sounds like people have something to hide.

Will there be cctv watching the person who is watching you?

there will be restrictions on who can access and view it and there will have to comply with DPA regulations
but yes they can put them up

NO, CCTV aren't prohibited. you just need to register with IPO (£35) and put up a sign saying there is CCTV.
