    Worried about losing my job

    Good morning people.

I'm a bit worried that I might lose my job.
I've been working there for about 3 and a half months and have had a few sick days off. I was off sick yesterday and today because of conjunctivitis (pink eye) which is very contagious.
My line manager has asked for a doctors certificate or not upon my return. The only thin is, I tried to book an appointment yesterday dn they had none available for yesterday or today. So how am I supposed to get a doctors certificate. Also, it is clearly up and Im sure I'll be able to return to work tomorrow.

I heard as well that if your off sick fo less than 7days in a row, ou don't need a doctors note.

I'm really anxious. What should I do?

    Quit before they sack you!

    You can self certify.

Can understand their position though if you've been taking sick days in your first few months. Does the conjuctivitis stop you doing your job?

Best thing to do is ring and speak to your line manager and explain how you feel...........they are the only one that can put your mind at rest and let you know their plans.

At our doctors you can ask the receptionist to get the doctor to sign a sick note and then you go and pick it up, no appt needed.

I was on that understanding too, less than 7 days is ok? I dunno, maybe its changed, unless you've had a lot of time off.. It probably seems like a lot if you've not been there v long.

If you need a note though cant you just tell them that at the doctors? Just ask for a phone consultation (Ive done this when I need a repeat prescription, it saves both our time that way), then explain you need a note too.

Sounds as though they just think you're taking the p*ss and want to check on you basically!

You dont need a sick note from the doctor - but unfortunately you are still on probation with your length of service, so effectively the employer will request whatever it wants and you must jump. You can buy a certificate AFAIK.

    Good luck

Out of curiosity, what do you do?

    @Syzable.
First off, thank you for your input.

It does prevent me from doing my job because I work in an office and I'm deskbound for the whole day, and it's also very contagious.
I have told my line manager yesterday that I couldn't get an appointment yesterday or today and he said, he thinks I should just go in there and wait. But it is clearing up a bit now (which I have told him thus morning) so I don't feel I need to go to the doctors.

You should clarify with your manager if he knows how your doctors centre operates as its different to how they think its run. Also ask if hes telling you to keep waiting at the doctors instead of coming back in when you are fit and ready but still without the sick note.

I'm not on my pribation period anymore. Im only on a six month contract and the probation period only lasted a month which I passed.

PS To the person above who asked, I'm a business support liaison officer at my local council.

I see it like this too, doesn't sound like they trust you. I would either go to the doctors and sit there until you are seen or go to work even if it is contagious.

I see. So you think that if they sacked you, you would have rights under tribunal and employment law? Thats the key. Anything less than 2 years continual service and they can play around with you and there's pretty much nothing you can do.

Tell them when you spoke to your doctor that he/she told you to self certificate for the 1st week as per the law and if it continues they will provide you with a certificate............they shouldn't question it. I've caught conjuctivitis off the kids before.........it's irritating as hell.

I seem to remember going to the doctors once and I am sure they refused to give me a certificate on the grounds that I could self cert. There was some sort of mix up about why I couldn't but I think they said I would have to pay £15 for one if I insisted (this is going back a few years)

Ok I've just spoke to my surgery and the lady said that thy can't give me a doctors note or certificate because I've been off sick for less than seven days in a row. She also said that it's government law to fill out a self certificate from your employer if its less than 7 days. If I wanted a doctors note/cert now, it would have to be a private one which costs £10 she told me.

No, you seem to save spouting all your crap for on here.

Maybe it's time to find something as a hobby instead of coming on a site just to throw insults at people all day.

    So what should I do?
I really can't afford to pay £10 for a note.
I could send my line manager a picture of my eyes to prove it.
I don't know what else I can do.

If you have pink eye using a computer screen the last thing you should be doing (at work OR ON HERE!).

You can self certify, this is law and your employer should no this, no doctors required.

I'll lend you a tenner if it's genuine.

At the end of the day, you can not be sacked for having a couple of days off sick. When you are better go into your work and say you went to the doctor but they refused you a note because you can self certify. Simple.

Dont worry about it. And also, its only a 6 month contract anyway so even if you did lose your job its not the end of the world.

Sickness is a pain in the UK, but some people it is genuine, business have to put up with it

If i was your employer and after only a few short months you took a sick day for conjunctivitis, i’d be questioning your reliability.

It’s conjunctivitis for god’s sake, go into work, don’t touch your eye and if you do, wash your hands afterwards. This isn’t like you’ve got swine flu, if you cough you aren’t going to affect the entire office.

Such a stupid reason to take a day off sick.. It’s like not you’re working with food or an environment that needs to be sterile.

Any excuse for a day off.

Unfortunately some employers will sack you because you didn't tie your shoe laces up, wore grey trousers or your hair is too short. Employers can and do what they wish and there is little you can do until you've been employed for two years and get employment rights. Obviously not employers are like this, many are very fair. Many are complete *****.

You should always go into work no matter how sick you are, they'll send you home eventually or if they don't just say look I feel like **** I'm going home. Don't just stay at home though, that's bad!

Get some anti-biotic eye drops from the chemists and some single use artificial eye drops...though I'm guessing as you can't afford £10 for a note you can't afford those either. You only get one set of eyes though.

I gave up caring at this point.

If you were that anxious and worried you wouldn't be on here for the last couple of hours asking total randomers what you should do. In all fairness if you can't think of what to do I am beginning to see what your manager is probably seeing.

Your replies are starting to make think this another HUKD wind up.

hope you've been saving, cos if you even make it to the end of your 6 month contract I doubt they will be keeping you on. Loads of temps have been given the boot from our council as there just isnt funds in the budgets atm.

I think some people don't have a clue and genuinely take all their advice from strangers on the internet. No initiative whatsoever.

OP: Pay a tenner and get a doctors note or carry on worrying about your job! Simple!!!!

I'm not employed by my local council, I just work for them.
I'm employed by a programme called 'Future Jobs Fund' under 'Urban Futures'.

I'm on minimum wage and only have enough money left for my travel until I next get paid.

If you are WELL enough to be posting on here... your well enough to be at work!

A perfectly good job taken by a lazy idiot who’ll use any excuse to pull a sick day.

Hopefully, you’ll get binned. Then they’ll find somebody else who actually appreciates being employed, only taking sick leave when it’s actually required.
