Hi all,
Just wanted your views on the VW Golf. I am keen on buying a used one
I know the German makes are very nice good quality cars however need your experiences.
I have £4K to spend and looking to buy the Golf. With the budget was able to find 2004 plate with approx 80K milege usually 2-3 previous drivers.
So the question is: is the milege worth it or too high. How much do the Golfs milege go up too without much trouble.
And does with Golfs would you say the service & maintenance costs are too high if compared with toyota corollas?
thanks

I'm guessing it's the 1.6SE. It will have some nice spec (like elec windows all round) but will not be amazing on the mpg because it is heavy.

It should do about 120k without any issues, but this will depend on servicing etc, also check that the cambelt has been done and also at what intervals it needs to be done, just in case it is at 80k at hasn't been done yet.

Parts for German and Jap cars are more expensive than say French cars, but they generally last longer.

Find a good independant garage that specialise in VW's and ask for their opinion. I have one near me (Sussex/Surrey border) and they are top notch.

Another 60K or so many years, Whichever is nearer, Cambelts perish over time, Check gear box carefully, certain VW gear boxes are know to be dodgy, Think the older Golf's but still keep that in mind.

I'm with you completely on the cambelt.

Gearbox, I think 04 plate will have the same one I had in my N reg Golf but I suppose it might have the DSG and generally if they've been good for 80k, then they'll last ages, they tend to give up in the first 20k or so, but you are right in that it is something to look at. Edit: Ignore this bit if you aren't after an auto
The MKV golf is very good. I have just bought a 2007 1.9 TDI Match with 123k for £3900. Drives like the day it came out of the factory. Very very solid. It's got Parking sensors, auto lights, auto wipers, cruise.

Go for it. I have heard bad reports about the DSG gearbox, but I have no first hand experience of this.
couple of other things to check out while your looking.

Common fault is with the ESP, you will need to replace the ABS pump at a cost of around £500 but good chance VW will cover on good will cos its a known issue so look to pay around £120

Check radiator for leaks (check for water underneath car) they have p1$$ poor radiators and rot quickly - new rad is around £180

wow £3900 sounds like a bargain for a 07 plate, however the 123k milege really puts me off. however you sound confident with the car hence i might go for the golf overall despite its hard finding a good one.

It's worth taking the time to get the right one. Always do a HPI check. I wasn;t bothered about the miles...it's an ex fleet car with every receipt for all parts since it was new.

Yes mate, he is offering final price of £4k for it. It looks alright however one drawback is that service is due now.
It looks ok to me, but of course, you're the one who will see it in the 'flesh'. Therefore, go with your gut feeling after checking it over.

Regarding service, find a specialist VW/Audi/Skoda/SEAT garage who will know the cars inside out and chances are you'll get your moneys worth. My local specialist has ex-employee's of local dealers, all the equipment, they get the recall info and told me what to keep an eye out for in the next 12 months, that was when I had my Skoda Fabia and my Audi A3.

Cambelt is 80k btw, so factor in however many miles you do per year so you'll know when it needs doing.
