    Would You Complain?

    To bullet the story:
    - car is 15 years old, 1 litre Polo, 95k on the clock
    - new sparks and coil pack in last 2 years
    - only done 10k in last 4 years
    - took car for MOT (6 days before expiry) last Friday
    - was failed on 2 power steering pipes, bulbs
    - quote was £800, basically told to write off the car
    - took for second opinion; actually looked at the car belly myself and was told that only one pipe would need replacing and their costs were majorly over the top (both places new from a parts dealer)
    - got work done, MOT after, passed, total cost (including fresh MOT fee) £220. MOT done at a different garage blind (not told about repairs)

The first place was a big brand test centre. Would you bother complaining to their head office about the after care?

Advocate as much as you like...just wonder what you'd do in the circumstance

yes. in writing - not over the phone, providing copies of quotes.

I used to use ATS for my family cars MOT's as it was just across the road, after a couple of years I noticed they always seemed to fail on either exhaust, tyres or brakes. Just the three items that they specialised in. I just stopped using them, found an independent garage to use instead.

Unfortunately, the quote the first garage gave me he basically screwed up the piece of paper and didn't bother as he knew it'd be "too expensive, may as well write it off"

Did you take the name of the representative you spoke to at that time (& noted the time)?

If not, can you re-visit & ask to speak to the same person? Get their name, & use that in your written correspondence.

key learning is never take it to the big brand sheds, they always sell up.

I used 'we only mot' and they passed my car first time ( first car to do this in 10 years) .
Never go to big names. But yes complain, leave reviews on google etc to warn others

All achievable. Time is fine, name I can get.

If it was a big garage, there will be a job code associated with the work and an itemisation of the billing that was due to take place should you have gone for it. Mechanics (at work) cant work on cars unless there is a job code for insurance purposes. Just ask for the quote to be re-printed.

me I'd treat it as a learning experience and go back to the place that saved me money for next years MOT .

Unlikely to be upselling as it makes no sense to tell the customer to write-off the vehicle and so achieve no sale!

    Yes I would complain

that's not what they would be thinking when they gave the price, the Op may have been more gullible and just paid it, plenty do, at the end of the day the garage either gets you to pay it making them a small fortune or you walk away. Sadly it happens all of the time. Seen it myself in the past everyone will know a story like this. Going back to my younger days was told a £20 hub axel would cost £600 as the whole back end needed doing, a free brake check, done just to see the state of the pads needing £400 of work reality was it cost less than £50 took to my friendly independent and asked him to fix the list of things and hardly anything was needed. A friend who was told they needed a new cat when they went for an exhaust change, someone at work wife went to their local shed for a new tyres and the garage said they would do a free exhaust check and then took the full exhaust off the car and wouldn't put it back for her when she said it was to expensive. Plenty other stories out there.

Don't see what you hope to achieve through complaining. They offered a quote which you were well within your rights to refuse. You can get the work done elsewhere though and take back to the original test centre for them to do a retest (sometimes for a nominal fee)

My advice would be to find somewhere who only deal with MOT's. That way they will only fail a car if it doesn't meet the standards and not for any unscrupulous reason to make more money for themselves through potential repairs. I know in this instance the garage weren't recommending you have the work done but some garages would and some people unfortunately just go along with it.

What will your complaint be? I tell you what, I'll quote you £1500 for the same work.I await your complaint....

Thinking about it, they probably load their prices to the cover the admin cost of dealing with people's time-wasting, pointless complaints.

I wouldn't waste time complaining (because I'm lazy) just be thankful that your instincts were spot on to go for a 2nd opinion,
you'll only get a standard response letter back saying their experienced professional guys gave you the best advice & they have 100million satisfied customers blah blah blah here's a voucher for 20% off your next service & MOT X)

Paid for an MOT which was so vague it could be classed as a load of ballcocks, which was £40

I bought a second hand Mercedes E class a few years ago. I took it to a trusted Mercedes specialist to give it the once over and they claimed that it needed new brake pads, discs and shocks. I was slightly dubious about this so then took it to 3 other independent garages and they all stated that there was nothing wrong when the car at all.
I had the car for 3+ years and never had any issues with it except for needing a new battery.

Never trust anyone when it comes to screwing you for money.

Just steer clear of the garage from now on and give it poor word of mouth.

Have the cat MOT done at your local authority test station as they do not do any repairs so if it fails it needs to as there is no incentive to fail it.

Technically correct...but if I told you you had no legs and you looked down and you had one, I wouldn't be telling you the whole truth. It's misleading.

You might be better off reporting them to trading standards, if they get enough complaints from different customers they will investigate the garage, but if nobody bothers to complain they will keep getting away with it, and as said above, some people will fall for it and get ripped off

Degradation of pipes on a car is open wide to to different interpretation. It isnt as simple as seeing if a pipe is there or not.

If a car has a few faults then you can bet your money that one MOT station will have a different perspective than another.

In anycase you have no money claim so court isnt an option & so why would you waste any of your time on it?

Unless of course you might want to suggest an attempted overcharge to Trading Standards (like the above poster pointed out). In which case they will look at the company if enough complaints are made.

The independent (who didn't do the MOT) looked at it from the bonnet and under the chassis and showed me everything as clear as day.
Fluid reservoir wasn't empty (as suggested with a severe rupture and leak one each pipe), leak wasn't dripping from pipe which did need replacing (slight collection at the bottom of pipe), the other was fine (slight clouding on one part of the pipe). Was good to have that all explained.

    Wasn't kwik fit was it?

They're notorious for it; usually do a "We can probably buy it from you for x amount"

You might as well name the chain, we've heard it all before.
I had a run in with KwikFit a few years ago. I wouldn't dial 999 if I saw the place up in flames.
Though I wouldn't wish harm on anyone.

More like 2 vehicle MOT places had different views. Yep the price was high on the repair but you didnt pay it.

Seriously, dont waste your time. You will not get anything other than a free MOT next year but why would you accept that? If you dont trust them?
