Would you throw yourself on a live grenade......

Just read the story on BBC website about the Marine who threw himself on a grenade to save his colleagues lives.

He was awarded the George Cross (and rightly so). I'm sure his colleagues would have bought him a pint or so (after calling him an idiot for triggering it in the first place).

Makes me feel really humble when you read stories like this.

I posted this not to start a discussion about the rights and wrongs of Iraq/Afghanistan but to remind people of all the little acts of heroism that we never hear about.

They're not perfect, they may be poorly equipped but our forces are the best in the world.

That's nothing!

I would throw myself on top of a Dell battery to save my colleagues!

I have to say he is one lucky mofo!

An outstanding act of courage........he deserves all the awards he gets

Incredible really, no time to think about it and his immediate reaction was to jump on top and save his colleagues.

I think my first reaction would be to run and hide, shouting 'get out, get out' in a big squeeky girly voice

Very brave. Something I doubt I could do for anyone bar family.

The fact that he was not killed as well is incredible.

Definitely deserves the award.

Well Done to him!

Take alot of courage!

Wow! True hero!

I don't think there is a single member of parliament who would have done that courageous act, that guy deserves every admiration for that selfless act

a reservist aswell! nice to hear the good stuff

I think the war is a sham and it is a disgrace that our government acts and does the things it does in many countries. But , I have nothing but respect and the up most admiration for British Soldiers who have to put themselves in these positions. The soldier in the story, one word - HERO! I couldn't do it. Maybe if it was years ago,WW1, WW2,but even then, that was "started" by America and was another way in which the minions (us) are controlled...

Moment of madness! j/k brave guy

worthy

i would have grabbed my helmet put it on the grenade and sit on it

maybe he just tripped up when running away and fell on the grenade

wow hes alive and in one piece! amazing huh!!

might not agree with the war and all but OP is right.... the men and women that are fighting for their country are damn amazing.

You DON'T join the services to worry about politics only to serve.

How on earth can a backpack stop a grenade???
I would have thought he and the backpack would be blown to smithereens.

I don't want any discussion about this. Our boys may be blah blah blah but they are the best in the world. End of story. .

Is this not jingoistic tomfoolery?

No and I'd be grateful if you didn't try to make this into a political argument. Please start another thread for that discussion. Cheers

I think sitting on it would be the last thing you would do......What about your "package"!!

No, but can I throw you on it instead:-D

I would never had dared join the Army in the first place! I take my hat off to all of those that sign up knowing one day they may die a premature death in awful circumstances. That said I couldn't kill anyone either. So NO I can't say I would have thrown myself on the grenade...

Oh well, there are some of us who think issues are worth discussing. And my point was (and it now seems even more ironic given your response!) that if you want to have an apolitical thread, then you should avoid overtly political statements like 'our boys are the best in the world.' It seems to me that people who put forward such strong opinions should either have the confidence to discuss them openly or avoid them completely. And fyi, I wasn't attempting to start an argument  But yeah, cheerio :lazy:

I think that the guy is one amazing bloke, well done it proves he did'nt just join up to see the world and have a good time!
