Would you use this bacon?

Found 13th Apr 2010
I am looking for something for tea as didnt manage to make it to the shop today.
I have a brand new sealed packet of bacon in the fridge but says USE BY 5th April.

It hasnt been frozen at any point.
Would you use it or not?
The colour still looks great, no browning to it or anything

if it doewsnt smell i would use it

id use it.

I would either cook it up and see what the results are or wait till it starts to stink and take it back to the retailer suggesting that you have just defrosted it and must have been off before you froze it.

As long as its still pink and not smelly, We had some bacon that was 2 weeks out of date, but was still very pink so i braved and opened it and there was no bad smell so cooked it and we were all fine,

aww dam!!! I have just put them all to bed! I will let hubby try his food first then if he is still breathing I may try it x

Thanks all I will see if it smells when I open it

I wouldn't but OH would most definitely. He eats the most amazing out of date stuff and is still here to tell the tale. As he says it doesn't automatically go off at midnight that day  Anyway if it looks okay then go for it.

You'll be fine

Life is a rollercoaster.

I wouldn't, not worth risking being sick etc. I'd rather have a sandwich or something plain instead. OH would though - he'd eat anything that smelt okay.

And you decided to join!!!

As long as it's vacuum packed then I'd eat it, they must under date all food for safety purposes i would imagine.

If you don't log in tomorrow then we'll know.

On the other hand I'm expecting a 'We ate out of date bacon and now I'm being sick, what do you think is wrong' post tomorrow.

m&s introduced dates before that you used you eyes and nose
if it looks ok smells ok the it will almost certainly be ok
i would eat it

Not really.

As a general rule, anything with a use by date on it is prone to micro' growth and therefore should be eaten before the date is up - that's why it's unlawful to sell anything beyond the 'use by' date.

Best before dates are however, different.

As long as you are relatively healthy with a good immune system and access to a phone for 999 you chances of survival are really quite good.
Are you getting excited at the prospect of doing something dangerous :w00t:

Best Before is just a recommended date to eat the product by (ie before it starts to go off and not that nice)

Use before is when it has to be eaten before, especially with meat products as bacteria etc starts to grow and can give you food poisioning - so don't eat it if it says 'use before' and the date has passed.

We used to have larders and not store very much - get from the shops/ butcher's van the day you were going to cook!! ;-)

Gosh, what a party when rationing ended.

Bacon is full of preservatives I expect - it'll be fine!
