Trying to get onto xbox live with a x-box just bought off a mate..

Heres the problem:

When checking network status, it says cant connect, so I clic test connection....

Then it goes to IP connection and says "failed" on the more info bit this is the info I get....

Your PPPoE settings were not validated by your ISP. Turn your console off and back on and try again.

This test verifies that your console has a valid IP address. If your console does not pass this test:

Confirm that there are no other devices on your network with the same Ip address.

If you are using a router or gateway, verify that it is configured to assign IP addresses to network devices (DHCP enabled)

I am using a router, and a ethernet cable.....

I am thinking this is something to do with the previous owners settings (although I am guessing)

  1. Misc
  2. Xbox One

Have you tried turning the router off for about a minute then trying again?

yes, I have tried that

Hmmm not very good with these things tbh, do you know if it's trying to detect the settings manually or automatic? You could try restoring to factory settings aswell.

Maybe you can follow this guide?

Automatically........ I dont want to try any default setting till someone who knows about these things actually tell me to, I am like you mate, dont know a lot about these things

By some chance did you mate have ADSL and you have cable (or vis versa)?

Either way, try the following:
1) Go to "My Xbox" and press A
2) Then go to "System Settings" and press A
3) Go to "Network Settings" and press A
4) Go to "Configure Network" and press A
5) Select "IP Settings" and press A
6) Select "Automatic" and press A (if not already set)
7) Select "DNS Settings" and press A
Select "Automatic" and press A (if not already set)
9) Press right to move into "Additional Settings"
10a) If you are using ADSL via a router, or using Cable
i) Select "PPPoE Settings" and press A
ii) Select "Clear settings"
iiii) Select "Done" and press A
10b) If you directly connecting your XBOX to an ADSL modem
i) Select "PPPoE Settings" and press A
ii) Select "User Name" and press A
iii) Enter your ADSL user name and then select done (probably case sensitive)
iv) Select "Password" and press A
v) Enter your ADSL password and then select done (probably case sensitive)
vi) Select "Serivce Name" and press A
vii) Enter your ADSL service name and then select done (probably case sensitive)
viii) Select "Done" and press A

If all else fails try "Restore to Factory Defaults"

Hope the above helps.

However if you can give us more information like:
Are you using ADSL or Cable
Do you have a router

Cheers
