Microsoft's downloadable film rentals for the Xbox 360 console will cost from £2 per movie in the UK.

The Xbox Live Marketplace Video Store launches in Europe on December 11.

Some 40 films will initially be available to rent as downloads from the online service.

They will cost £2 for standard film formats or £3.20 for high definition films.

The films stay on the console's hard drive for 14 days after being downloaded via broadband from the Marketplace website.

They must be watched within 24 hours after the user first presses play.

Robin Truchy, director of Xbox Live for Europe, said the launch would increase the range of entertainment options for Xbox 360 fans.

"We want to give them the entertainment they want, in the format they want, when they want it and at an affordable price," he said.

Gamers can also choose to rent the films using Microsoft Points, instead of money, which they accrue while playing games over Xbox Live.

Dont we have to buy microsoft points?

It's a good idea, but how is anyone but an Elite owner going to have space for the high-def films? A quick Google suggests 4.5gb a pop!

Its doesn't really matter because the film downloaded deletes itself after 14 days or after 1 viewing.

I appreciate that, but considering you only have 12gb to play with in the first place...

Some people dont download demos etc,so they would have space

Yeah, at the moment i've got 12 gb of space left so could fit a film in quite easily

Also how much is £2 in Ms points?

microsoft points and gamer points are different things are they not??
"Which they accrue whilst playing games" makes it sound like you use gamer points???

Clearly PA News have no idea what they're talking about.

lol not much sense, it seems a god idea, easier andcheaper than blockbusters, but will it take off?

i assume we would have to pay using points, or will they just charge the card 2 quid?
