    xbox live help......................please

For the last 3 days, my son's connection to xbox live has been running really slow. He has tested the wireless connection and that's fine and our internet is also running well.

I know nothing about xbox 360's or xbox live so I am at a loss to know if there is anything I/he can do about this.

Any help or pointers would be most gratefully received

what do you mean slow? Can you elaborate?

Tell him to check the connection on the 360 to xbox live by running the test on the xbox itself. Then look at the nat type. I will either be Open, Strict or Moderate. Open is the best setting for it to be on. If its on this already then I dont know what could be wrong other than your isp is slow or hes trying to play with americans with slow internet connections. If it is one of the other two then it would require some tweaks to your router.

It sound like it most probably just the games he is playing on LIVE. I get it now and then when like deathtrap said you are playing those Americans.

Just try and watch a movie trailer through LIVE and if that streams OK then it is most probably the game servers.

It could however also be that the ISP you are with does not prioritise gaming traffic and your son has just been playing at a busy time.

My son's connection says it is fine and all the bars are up and connection on the network settings are high but when he wants to join a game it just sets his connection as red and causes lag. If he sets up a game with one of his friends it will put their connection poor and the game unplayable.

He has run the test and the connection is open. He's not playing Americans just local school friends.

I think your confusing the local network (wireless connection) and the internet. The red connections in the games mean that its most likely a problem with your internet provider.

Who are you with and what speed is it at?

We are with Virgin Media with 20mb although we only get about 10mb cos we have an old modem (we have a new one but that's another story)

I've never seen such a miserable child, you'd think it was the end of the world.

I've tried posting on Virginmedia's gaming newsgroup but to date no reply

Which game is he trying to play on there ?

Sometimes with virgin you need to power cycle your connection. Turn off youu router and xbox for 30 seconds then tuurn them all back on again. That usually works for me.

Live has been terrible of late on games like COD4, I think they underestimated just how many new people would be joining after Christmas.

Saying that i'm on a BT Home Hub and the bloody thing can just decide to kick every wireless device off the network for no real reason and a power reset seems the only solution.

What about the person he is connecting to...this could be slow if his friend is 'host'

Well at about 7pm last night, it all went back to normal. Don't know what the problem was but I'm thankful it's sorted.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions
