Xbox : Seperating HDMI 5.1 audio to optical with 4k 120hz

Posted 12th Dec 2020
Hi folks

Got an Xbox series X but has no optical out.

My Logitech surround sound has no hdmi in.

The optical in/out on my TV is blocked by the bracket it's held up on.

I figured I just buy something that splits the Audio from the hdmi. But in looking at it. I presume 30hz means it's gonna limit the frames per second ?

I currently have a 1080p TV at 60 Hz , but I'd like to upgrade in the future to 4k and be a shame not get 120hz.

anyone know how to do this ?
or if I took my TV off the bracket, should it be able to pass through the Dolby / DTS to my reciever, through the optical out.

thanks for any help or opinions

this was what I was looking at.

For what you’re trying to do, and for the cost of the item, I wouldn’t bother trying to “future proof” a HDMI Audio Extractor. They’re cheap devices. You have a 1080p 60Hz TV. Just get one that’s suitable for that now, because that’s what you’re trying to do. Worry about an updated device as and when the time comes. I’ve not even seen 120Hz HDMI Audio Extractor. I suspect if they exist, they’re not going to be £18.99.

The one you linked should work. I’ve tried this one before, worked well, seamlessly 24/7 for two years until I no longer needed it:

As for if your TV will output 5.1 passthrough over optical on its own, only one way to find out, check. It should do. You’ll probably have to change some audio settings. If you have the manual, see if it says in there, or search your model number and query. Or check physically if you can be a55ed.

But for less than 20 quid, I’d rather not have to mess about demounting it.

If/when you get a new TV, it’s almost certain that it will do 5.1 over optical if it has it.And you’ll have immediate access to the back panel (edited)

Have you checked whether your sound system and TV supports ARC? I had been using TOSLINK for years, then found that when I connected my sound system to HDMI 1 on my Philips TV (labelled ARC) and enabled ARC in the settings on my Sony system, it worked! 5.1 surround and the sound system turns on/off with the TV.

Sorry saw that your system has no HDMI-In, but neither has my Sony, but as it is a blu-ray system it does have a normal HDMI-Out.

Before I moved over to ARC I did look into getting one of these as an all in one solution to get all of my devices to output 5.1 audio to TOSLINK:

Not sure if that will do it?
