XP Reinstall............. What do YOU recommend?

    Banned
    .

Long story short. My Vostro Lappy has either got corrupted or infected. Either way, I've struggled with it long enough and gonna reinstall XP with SP2 from my original discs. (Yes - it is an original XP disc - one of a very few I have!!!!!!)

So currently backing up as much as I can.... the obvious saves are easy. Finding everything is a bit more problematical. So gonna try to save an image using Ghost Portable. Not sure if I can get stuff back from the image (rather than just ghost a drive) but will soon find out! Anyone used it?

OK, once its on the machine and current drivers installed, I'm gonna ghost that also (to save time if it messes up again.) I'll repeat this once I have the basic software installed I need (eg Adobe CS4 packages, MS Office etc)

    Now here's the real question.....

What combination or all in one solution would you recommend for Anti-Virus / Anti Malware? I was using Avast - but currently AVG Pro...... whether or not the current problems are due to its failings (rather than just a corruption) I don't know. But would rather fix it once and for all and start afresh with a better set of protection.

Word of warning on Ghost, dont rely totally on it, back up separately and if your ghost drive works its a bonus, ive had it fail on me in the past which caused all number of problems and lead to another re-install lol.

I use Kaspersky IS for everything its never let me down on viruses and ive been using it for a few years now, firewall takes some learning but once you master it its as good as any. Best of all is its hourly updates, i dont know of any other IS that does this, although i never notice the updates because its all in the background and simply downloads a tiny definitions file.

    hope this helps.

    yeah, Kaspersky, no others

but for FREE options, I personally use Comodo Internet Security (3 in 1, antivirus defense + and firewall). I know its not the best but i like it cos its light in resources...

If i have to choose independently, id go with Avira + one of the firewall (ithink many are good but Comodo is also a reasonable option).

heres a link to kaspersky trial (without having to register)

AVG Free and Malwarebytes Antimalware are all you need.

If you bank with Barclays they might still be giving Kaspersky away free.
If not, try your bank's website to see what they are giving away.

Are you using the one that you can get free with a Barclays bank account? I noticed it mentioned in the deal section (with an option to download for a tenner without an account.)

How about Nod32 Eset Smart security ? eset.co.uk/Com…ion
I am about to install this on my laptop. You can download a 30 day free trial.
I have used this on my other computer and it hasn't let me down. There is another program you can use instead of Norton Ghost its called acronis.co.uk/

Under Linux I've used Dar dar.linux.free.fr/ before for imaging - assuming that there's a Windows release too.

Once you're up and running - the usual suspects, Avast/AVG, Spybot (mainly for immunisation of hosts), CCcleaner once a week. Don't really bother with a firewall as such, behind a router.

Cheers. Not even heard of NOD32 before! Anyone else have any thoughts on it?

Whilst the Ghost alternative may be useful in the future, I wouldnt be able to install on my Lappy as it stands. Having said that, I'm hopeful Ive retrieved all the stuff "I need" - there is always that area of doubt - hence the question about the portable Ghost I have. (Never tried it though!)

Cheers. That might be useful - I'll look into that. My HD is currently partitioned and have Linux as a dual boot option.

My Router does have a firewall - but is switched off. Always a bit iffy about using it. (ie there will always be something that needs to be excepted from the firewall - never looked into what's needed to bypass it. I'm using a Thompson "Bethere" modem if that makes any difference?

Cheers. Another one I've not heard of! Anyone else used this?

Have to say, when I had problems previously, I was using Avast. I got rid of that and installed AVG and it imediately found stuff that Avast had missed.

Now here's the rub! I can see that software youve said is free.... and there are obviously free and paid versions for all / most of the AV software. But what gives here? Are the free versions somehow limited. Are they "not as strong" as the paid versions? AV isnt something you can really go "lite" on.

Anyway.... I've now destroyed the old install and currently re-installing. Too bad if I missed any saves now!

Just need to decide what protection to go for!

Yeh, there are "some" honest traders on there. lol! A mate of mine paid £45 for a training disc for digital cameras (retail price was £55 - so was saving a tenner). When it arrived it was of course a copy. Just showed me that regardless, you cant be too careful. The guy was a high profile seller too!

Youve got thye pro version, everythings (that is essential tools) work...
they exp;lained that they got money from certifying websites (just likes thawte/mcafee etc)

I've never had a problem with Avast in four years, used AVG for that time too (different pc) but that seemed (subjective i know) to drain resources more. do you know the likely source of infection as that may have a bearing on what AV product/suite to use...

Source almost certainly usenet. That said, the problems manifested after I tried to update my genuine XP with SP3.

Right.... formatting and basic install completed... now to booger it up again!

Install of XP complete with all drivers working. Install of CS4 Web Design and Onone photoshop filters installed.

Still not decided on AV / Malware...... But also think it advisble with this near enough virgin install, to back it up with a Ghost (or similar) image.

Anyone able to give any tips for this? I've always said I should do this each time I do an install - but never got round to it.

I'm assuming without installing software, I cant do this inside Windows? Would I need to run a USB boot disc to create an image? Really unsure - and never really found a good guide to do it.

    Pointers appreciated.

i have used Norton Ghost (14 iirc) with mostly good results. to be honest, i only bother imaging my really complex builds these days (the ones with lots of development tools on that take along time to configure/install) since windows installs seem to have got slicker and quicker (but then you are talking about xp still i suppose). Ghost installs as a Windows App and you get a Boot Disk (to run off cd-rom, not sure about usb drive support but i would think so)

OK. I do have (I think - or at least can get) Nortons Ghost to install. However, I'm trying to keep this install slimline and be certain I'm not introducing stuff that I'd later regret installing!

if you can get the Norton Boot Disk try creating an image from it (cant remember if that's possible) but would save you installing NG in windows (which i agree is quite an annoying utility that seems to be forever nagging you and popping tray icons!)

I always keep my "valuable" files/programs on a second HD and on DVD.

Re: AV etc, i did use AVG but after a couple of infections got through and remained undetected for a couple of years, (picked up when i tried out AVAST) I have stuck with AVAST ever since, along with Zonealarm pro, Adaware, Malwarebytes (touch wood) I have never had a problem since.
