^^ Handy link that shows all of Yahoo's sites and services. A few surprised me that they are Yahoo owned, Tumblr for example.

Kara Swisher of recode is reporting today that Yahoo are poised to confirm a massive data breach of its services, according to several sources close to the situation.

Whilst these sources would not confirm the extent of the breach, they noted it is widespread, and serious.

Earlier in the year, Yahoo said it was investigating a data breach where it was suspected that hackers had access to 200 million user accounts and were selling these online. "It's as bad as that" said one source, "Worse, really"

The announcement, which is due to come this week, could be very damaging to the new owners of Yahoo's core services, Verizon.

An infamous cyber criminal named "Peace" said on a website that he was selling credentials of 200 million Yahoo users from 2012 on the dark web for just over £1,500.

At the time, Yahoo was "aware of the claim" but the company declined to corroborate any claims of the breach.

Rumours of Data breaches are common news items these days, however, given Kara Swisher's position within Tech Journalism, this is as good as confirmed.

What will be the implications of such a breach? I'm sure Yahoo will have more to say on that in the coming week.

Would anyone miss Yahoo? I mean it was ok 15 years ago but it certainly doesn't seem to appeal to me or anyone I know now.

Personally speaking? Haven't used it in years. I do know a lot of people who still use the email service though.

That's all I ever used it for, then gmail arrived.

I have a Yahoo email address used solely for generating insurance quotes for a fake name and address (very close to actual address), to discover which firms to get a real quote from via a cashback site (_;)

this is the hack that happened in may not another

I still use Yahoo for email simply because it was the first email address I ever got and it's a nice simple one with my name on it, so easier to keep using it rather than the faff of trying to update stuff. Must admit I am sometimes slightly embarrassed when I give it out, I feel like people are looking at me the way I look at grown ups who wear Crocs in public.

Same here, had Yahoo email since 1999. Everyone I know has it, so changing it would be a pain...

    AP article

Finally confirmed that 500 million accounts could be affected! Yikes...

As advised earlier the breach originates from 2014, but it is suggested if you haven't changed your passwords to do so ASAP. That includes sites outside of Yahoo where you have used the same email/password.

Not surprised in the slightest. A few years ago Yahoo had major security flaws and seemed to have very little interest in protecting data or users.

When Flickr required a Yahoo account to access it I refused to touch it, and I really liked Flickr.

yikes indeed. not used my yahoo id for over 10 years. I always use fake information online
so hope I am not at risk.

    YIKES!

I'm glad this is a HUKD pick however.

haveibeenpwned.com will give you an idea as to whether your email account is on a breach list. The site is know to be safe but as you are giving it your email address you do so at your own risk!

Is it that bad? I've waited for a week for response. It's really difficult to contact them. No phone numbers or anything as well.

I've used Yahoo as my main email account for 19 Years. I logged-in about an hour ago, and they have finally put up some information about this. No apology though. The lack of an apology does bother me. Perhaps their weasel lawyers have told them not to say sorry as it shows culpability, and their PR people have told them to go with a, “State sponsored hack” line. For me this just adds insult to injury.

Just noticed SKY as well affected now

    'State-sponsored actor"

what is the meaning difference in outcome to people like us between "state sponsored" and "state did" ?
1/ Is it that one is lawful (nobody does anything wrong) and the other is not lawful?
2/ Is it that one is used only for foreign countries but not for us when we (state) do it?
3/ Or is it saying all states sponsor this type of activity?

    whats yarho?

    shocking news
that 500 million ppl still use yahoo

Realised I rarely used the account these days, so after hearing about this I've just initiated account deletion.

Goodbye Yahoo, you were always crap and will not be missed!
