I had this happen last month - logged onto my yahoo account and there was a "failed delivery" email in my inbox - checked it and it was an email to buy ps3/iphone etc for $100 or so! Checked my sent folder and there was the email, sent to all my contacts. All I did was sent an email to them all saying my account had obviously been hacked, and changed my password.

Maybe you should alert Yahoo Mail to this. I'm sure it will be a website bug! Maybe post on Yahoo's feedback forum?

Agreed. Like all of Sassie's bug reports, they should be investigated in depth at Yahoo Mail's earliest convenience.

Do the emails show up in your sent mail folder? What do you use to read your emails? ie: webmail / outlook / live mail / etc...?

Using the right email service/application one can specify any FROM email address, regardless of owning it or not.

What has most likely happened is that someone's computer has been infected with Malware and it is now sending out spam, randomly picking people from the address book as a source/from address (this way it is harder to figure out who is actually sending the spam).

no my sent box doesnt contain any sent mail, even the sent mail that was in there has gone, i just go to yahoo.com and login to my email

I am not aware of Malware that can send spam via webmail services, also it is of course theoretically possible.

Get your GP to forward you the email in question and then copy and paste the "email header" into a private message to me. I should be able to tell you if the email was sent via Yahoo or another email provider.

i assume you've changed your password since this has happened just as precaution..

i havent received one back, i only know it was sent as i had an email from that deamon thing, that said emails where rejected by some, and then it showed the list of all it had been sent to, and my gp was on the list, had some replys just stating my email had been received, but it didnt say what the email was

The email originated from a Romanian ISP called Romtelecom.

Unlikely that Yahoo UK/US use them.

As said before the from address in an email is just text, that can be replaced with anything.

There is nothing to worry about IMO, but do change the password and secret question/password recovery settings to be on the safe side.

Dunno why I'm bothering with this, but I disagree summoner... earlier in the thread it was stated the email seemed to have gone to OPs contact list. That would suggest it ISN'T a simple false from field.

Have you checked your email in an Internet Cafe lately?

Very strange. Webmail services do temporarily block users who enter the wrong password too many times, hence guessing it is pretty much impossible. They must have known the password from somewhere.

nope, no way someone just knew it, only ever use my lappy at home, just weird also that it wasnt sent to all of my contacts, only about half of them

Only reason I can see for them to wipe your sent box is to get rid of the evidence - obviously hoping no failure messages would come back, therefore leaving you none the wiser to their antics. The funny thing was, about 2 weeks after my account had this, a friends email address, one that is in my yahoo contacts, actually send the SAME email to me! So it may well be that they then go and attempt to hack those email accounts found in your contacts...

summoner you know that mail i sent to you, would that be all the ones it had sent to, because i will now have to email each one, it is weird that some where rejected as i know these emails adresses are still being used, gosh i wish i was techie minded

this happened to me recently (one month back) with hotmail with the email being to go and visit some chinese shop.

Not happy as some of my contacts were high profile (to me at least anyway) D:

Not all email services file "known spam" in a user's spam folder. A mail server can just as well drop or bounce the emails that score 10/10 on the spam meter.

thanks guys, im still completely buffled how they got my password, i know you only get like a few tries, so how the hell they could do that is beyond me

What type of security are you using to connect between laptop and router? ie WEP/WPA/WPA2

If WEP its feasible that someone has cracked your password (a couple of minutes is all it takes) they could be then using a "packet sniffer" to collect data sent wirelessly and getting your password that way, if this is the case they could be getting your logins for all your web usage including eBay/paypal/here etc.

they cannot get into my router unless they break in and press the pairing button

Don't actually need to connect, knowing the password is enough, then "sniffing" transmitted packets of data.
