It's possible that it can not be fixed by any means at all, as YLOD can happen for a variety of reasons.

Some people wrap it in a towel, and blow hot air from a hair dryer into one of the vents.

I strip them, and heat up the relevant parts with a hot air gun to reflow the solder, and redo the thermal paste.

The 1st method is the cheapest.

Yes, the quickest way to format it is to put it in the slim PS3 to format it, then put it back in the 60GB.

You can, but surely it's easier to do it in the other PS3?

To do it in another PS3 takes 15 mins tops.

The longest time is removing/replacing the HDD in the caddies, as the 60GB HDD needs to go into the caddy of the slim.

It depends on your PC set up whether it's quicker doing it that way.

Sony have now had the foresight to see how many users of old PS3s are losing their save game data and are offering (at a stupid fee) in their new firmware, the option to store game saves to a cloud, nice idea, shame it has to be paid for....I just had to update my PS3s firmware for nothing.

just put the hdd from the ylod ps3 into a slim and it just comes up as an error. Something along the lines of

The system software cannot be run correctly. Press the PS button to try to restart the system. If the system cannot be restarted correctly, the system partition of the hard disk must be reformatted and you must reinstall the system software. Insert storage media that contains update data 3.60 or later then press the start and select buttons at the same time

I downloaded the updated pup file onto a memory stick but still won't let me do anything and the pc does not see the drive and i really need to wipe it
