Your experiences shared - UK Customs ... US Sourced

    HUKD'rs

I have been looking to buy a Canon lens & flash from abroad as the title says from US... but have no experiences whatsoever with UK customs ... How lucky i can be in saving a fair bit on the Customs duty ... Have you ordered something and got stuck or paid customs....? Or you have been usually lucky ... The combined package i am looking to get is around $2000 but i may ask for gift wrap as i need it to be gifted to my bro ... What would you suggest?

Any experiences will be greatly appreciated ...

more then likey you will get stung, and it will be quite a bit as well.

Try labing the item as a GIFT,might help somewhat.

got some stuff through no worries....
The probelm is not customs charging you, but the costs of re-directing it

eg. I bought an American Football shirt for $100 or £50 (with Name on it as they cannot be taken out of US without a name on for some reason - so had to get printed in America). Cost £15 delivery - so £65...

then got stopped at customs so had to pay another £15 I think it was..... then cost about £20+ quid for delivery by courier from UK customs to my house...once its stopped it will cost a fortune

As Black Gerbil says get it labelled as Gift or under £18 and you should be ok

You def get taxed on £1000 for sure.
I think its about £18 limit for an item,or around £35 ish if marked as a gift,
I be very surprised if they didn't touch that amount.

Been mixed my end, sometimes I order and things not been taxed, like $150 order from America,my partner ordered a load from Metallica club, but then I spent some what more than that from DisneyStore and got taxed about 25% off value.
All goods have different rates of custom tax.But consider you need to pay at least 25% if not more.

lol it be obvious that it's worth over £18.

Companies probably wouldn't do it for you.

eBay seller would but this sort of item, too obvious it's not worth $25 or whatever.

its more then likely that you will have to pay a hefty tax & duty charge.

brought a Dior bag from the US FOR $475 had to pay £60.

25% is definitely quite a lot ... would make no sense for me to get it ordered from there then ....

Both my brothers have imported from the US, the first cost $300 and he got charged and the 2nd was $800 and he didn't.

there is actual rates and % on th customs excise site but I never really understand it so can't give you an exact break down but I'm sure someone on here will explain it to.
I always keep in mind I'll get taxed 25% roughly,I tend to buy the same type of goods.

I have a friend over there who sends me stuff but I don't rely on it,cos be suspicious doing it all time.

get the items sent seperately etc,cos a new complete package is obvious its worth a lot if they do take a look.

someone sent from somewhere to Australia a Mr Potato Head toy stuffed with drugs of some kind, they do randomly open and check parcels,so its not the case they just take notice of the customs label.

Thanks black gerbil1, ODB_69, Starrysky, Mum2Connor&Cerys & Robotochan.... much appreciate your comments ... rep added to all of you as a kind gesture in return ...

You should assume that you will get stung for both duty & tax.

Try calling the supplier and ask if they could label it as a repair. You only get away with "gift" if its under the value of £36. I would suggest calling the supplier to discuss what they could do for you - for example, they may even label it as a gift and put its cost as £25.

Not that I would suggest doing this...

I will check with the supplier ... duty & tax ... you mean 17.5% VAT + duty ... and how much is duty ? thanks mate,

depends theres a massive list of commodities and stuff on the gov website each has its own rate.

I won a calculator from ebay.com it was just over the £18 limit and boy did I get stung!! I got charged almost another £18 on top of what I had paid, I had to pay import taxes and then a handling fee!! It's put me off doing it again

Ok... sure i will search for it then ...

As the goods are over £18 (£36 for gifts) You will have to pay the following

1: Add together the total price of goods & shipping.
2: Add to this total the Duty. For camera lenses the duty is 6.7%. (Duty fees can be found ]here)
3: Add to this new total V.A.T. (17.5%)

On top of this you will have a handling fee of between £8 and £16.
