    Your opinions on this...

My grandfather is 89 years old. On Tuesday, he wasn't feeling too well (has problems with his chest) so he called the doctor out...
Some time later a female doctor came out, examined him, and said that he had laringitis.
She then proceeded to tell him to...."gargle his throat with some warm water and salt"
No medicine, no prescription, lukewarm water and salt!
When I heard this I laughed and asked him if it was the 1940's, or is it just after the war and we are still short of medicine....
Last night he called my uncle to say that he was having trouble breathing. He went round, called an ambulance, and he has been taken in to hospital with pneumonia.
I just feel that if he had received some medication on Tuesday when the doctor visited him, his infection may have cleared up.
    Thoughts...

USELESS Doctors who dont want to help and just want to get out

I'd put an official complaint in...probs wont get you anywhere but you never know

It's unacceptable, but I suppose everyone makes mistakes. It's a good job your uncle had the sense to call an ambulance. Hope he gets better soon x x x

I would complain, first to the local practise that she is from then to the GMC.

They just don't like prescribing antibiotics anymore, not sure whether it costs them or whether its a govt directive, but they are not prescribing antibiotics anywhere near as often as they used too.

    Hope he gets better soon,

report to the general medical council as they will figure out why this doctor did not pick up on the signs of pneumonia, thats shocking.

TY All I think my uncle is going down to speak to the doctor. He has a fiery temper, and I hope that it doesn't get out of hand...
I think they usually do a great job, and we have a great service, and I wouldn't want her to get in to trouble, but I just feel that there might be some incompetence on her part, and this needs to be addressed.

same happened to a young girl near me a couple of weeks ago, I think she was 19 and the dr said she had a cold or virus or something and was sent home but turned out to be pneumonia too, it was on the front page of our local paper. hope he gets well soon x x

Hope your grandad gets better soon

Make a formal complaint before she actually kills someone!

Firstly I hope your grandfather recovers quickly and has no ill-effects afterwards, I know it's scary with him being in hospital, but they can keep a close eye on him there.

The thing is the doctor can only diagnose a condition on the symptoms presenting themselves at the time and if it looked like a general throat infection then they would give you advice for that and say to come back if it got worse. It's not only bacteria that cause pneumonia, viruses, fungi, etc. can all cause it. The only way that antibiotics would have helped would have been if the source of infection was definitely bacterial so you would need to find out which it was before any complaints could be made.

The over-use of antibiotics when there is no obvious bacterial infection (and people not finishing the full course given to them) has allowed various bacteria to become immune to them, e.g. MRSA. The advice given now is to reduce antibiotic use when it's not deemed necessary to try and reduce this problem, this benefits us all in the long run.

By all means your family should discuss the situation with the doctor, but your Uncle should be careful what he says, especially if he has a fiery temper. Anyway, I hope your grandfather recovers soon!

    Thats a joke.

I know times are tough and we are in a recession but thats shocking. You would think we were living in the past. I would definitely make a formal complaint.
