Zen internet to upgrade BT customers to 20mbps for FREE

    Banned
    Upgrade for free by 2010

In the face of the 50mbps broadband speeds currently being offered by Virgin Media, your paltry, single digit speed might now seem a tad inferior. Fear not, though; if youre on a BT connection you should be entitled to a free upgrade courtesy of Zen Internet.

The service is said to be available this summer, although any upgrades in speed probably wont reach your monitor until 2010. Most customers - it is claimed - will have access to 9-13mbps speeds, although if you happen to live closer to a BT exchange youll reach the dizzying heights of 24mbps. Or thats the theory, at least.

I get 18.5 meg already on talk talk, boring!

Was that done automatically on talk talk? Our exchange has been upgraded as of last month but talktalk has not upgraded mine yet.

Last time I had about 3meg I had connection problems due to distance from exchange. Soon as they put me on a 2 meg profile it was stable so maybe not worth it for me anyhow.

why even look in here if you have talk talk?

take some basic maths lessons instead of making pointless comments on forums:thumbsup:

Yeah, Zen are one of the best ISPs out there but their packages are expensive. If you're a frequent but bandwidth-light user I'd definitely recommend them.

If you were frequently disconnecting then you may have had the same problems I had which was that the bell/ring wire in the house wiring was picking up noise and as such the standard modem behavior wasn't allowing a large enough noise margin, I'd been fine on my previous fixed connection because the variation never took it below the margin needed to connect.

]Removing the bell wire fixed my disconnection problems and gave me a nice speed boost in the process so you might like to try that and see if your noise margin on your router increases noticibly. If you'd rather check a bit before you start fiddling around with phone wiring then ]routerstats lite will let your graph your connection over the day. When I was disconnecting I was having the average dip down about 6-7db each evening, now it barely moves by 2db. Obviously, on your current fixed line connection it won't make any difference, but it will help if you ever want to move back onto a 8Mb or 16/20/24Mbps package as they're both rate adaptive and try to connect at the highest speed possible for a normal line so you'll get disconnections again if your line is excessively noisy.

Back on topic, this will just be the migration to the new 21CN telephone network and WBC broadband. Zen are just one of the earlier ISPs to announce it, everyone will follow eventually.

When I moved into this house froma new build 5 years ago the first thing I did before my broadband went live was remove the bell wire:thumbsup:

My bad connection is due to distance and noise which is fine if they keep me on a 2meg profile, any higher and I get constant sync issues.
