maybe they just meant it in an ebay fashion. Like "great ebayer, great service A********":-D

The mods hand out infractions even if you quote lyrics, and asterisk a word of a song that has a swear word, so I would expect that calling someone an *asterisk* would earn one.

so use some character other than an asterisk :-D

The mods don't really know what they are doing with asterixs as this thread shows
hotukdeals.com/ite…776

You can say this

ibiza;2599986

However, I do see the thread being used to **** you off!! :-D :-D :-D

But you can't say this
gari189;2606776

Does that mean I can call someone a *** or an ****?

See any difference - because I can't :?

it is avoiding the swear filter (now the word filter)as i have been suspoended for it without an actual swear word being shown whatsoever.....i did start a feedback thread when it happened

but it seems again another rule that is not enforced the same for all members or it depends which mod deals with it.........another inconsistent rule which can apply ie suspend people if their face dont fit

hotukdeals.com/ite…ter

there was never a definitive answer to my question just the usual.......speaks volumes when this happens as there is/was no justification

I personally don't see why anyone has to use * to prove that they can fake a swear word, or why they need to swear at all.

so in saying this you are saying you dont see the need for people swearing full stop even in real life situations, its a part of life and expression believe it or not......whether you personally agree with it or not........swearing isnt gonna go away in this lifetime or the forseeable future:)

consistency is the key and is what causes most of the squabble threads on the forum, which is the need for all these "clarification" of the rules

If you say so that it must be okay then/norm.:)

Consistency surely this depends on who picks up the report and the context of the post.:?

thanks for the replies, seems we have a inconsistency with members using the "*****" when writing a sentence, I think its because there is no rule for it on this site, so the mods prob have to take it on a case by case basis and thus why sometime people get warnings, other times nothing.

I think it depends on whether someone has reported or not.

no need for smart ass comments.

if you have managed to get through life without swearing once then fair enough, but i highly doubt it to be honest......which is where you earlier comment falls apart.

apparently this is a "family" forum although i see no consistency on this stance either.... with adult toys regulary posted as deals yet they are not allowed to be sold or traded by members. (not that you would want a used adult toy lol....well most people anyways:))

Well it was based on what you said, of course I used to swear but I really don't see the point in constructing a conversation around it especially when your typing it, do you get what I mean? You think type and usually check over what you type unless in jest, either way its pointless us going over it.

I agree with you on the second bit, as you constantly see them posting with stupid comments and all the childish people behind them. I think they either need to be allowed or forbid them, which begs the point in why is there a swear filter in the first place if you can post these deals, half the time there not even a good deal which leads you to believe there done on the back of getting a giggle, which is fair enough if you like that sort of thing but surely thats for misc.:)

The swear filter is in place to assist members who inadvertently use a profanity. We also take into account the context in which it is used. Members may still fall foul of another point within the code of conduct, such as inappropriate language/offensive/insulting another member.

To avoid any doubt, don't avoid the word filter and more importantly, once your post has been submitted, it's up for review immediately. The author can see the word(s) which may have been replaced and should take this as a cue to consider replacing the offending term.

thanks for the reply, although I am a little bit confused.

Lets say for example someone posts

Memeber X : that is rubbish, why did you even get that?
Memeber Y: what is your problem you *******?

Member Y didnt type a swear word which got filtered out but just a bunch of stars, i'm guessing in that context he would get punished?

while in this case

Member x: lol ha that made me laugh. your such a loser
Member y: lol please go away you ***

^would that be punished, both members are just jestering with each other , and once again no swear word was wrote, the member just put the stars up again.

thanks

Asb, if i may call you Asb?

i think what op is partly saying is that people are just posting asterisks in the first place so the actual word filter isnt actually coming into play....

I don't think we can allow anyone to use that as a get out clause/valid excuse, otherwise it's an open season.

In answer to the OP, you're correct. It's not allowed, however I'm unsure if you're asking a question or making a statement.

so what happens if someone puts " you are a ****************" because surely if there are no letters and they are all asterisks and possibly too many for an offensive word .....would this be an infraction?

would you take asterisks as being offensive if that is how they were directed? even though they are asterisks:thinking:

Just noticed the follow up from the OP.

If in any doubt don't use. I've explained what a member should do in the event of a word filter kicking in.

As previously mentioned, it will be taken in context. However I'd advise that this should not be used, otherwise you run the risk of being misinterpreted or falling foul of another rule such as 'insulting/offensive'. Just type what you mean, no need for cryptic code.

So if I avoided the swear filter by using the asterix I could call you whatever I like as long as I claim I was jesting? I can see quite a few trying that one :whistling:

Why not just say that any avoidance of the swear filter is an infractionable offence........

Banned

Gari189,

We advised all against trying that one out, it's not to be done, otherwise you run the risk of infraction. We wouldn't intend getting in touch with members who post such comments and asking them their true intentions.

Simple point - don't do it, the member is likely to face an infraction.

surprised it gets passed the editors

i mentioned this before but didnt get an answer in the other thread.....too contentious an issue .....the line apeears to be if you are offending/insulting people regardless of what you say......

i have to say tho that if suggestion of a swear word is now deemed to be offensive what about suggestion of other things........if someone suggests i am a "druggy" would this be deemed offensive or what about if someone suggests someone is a "racist" from the content of the posts they make......is this acceptable?

again there can be suggestion of being offensive/insulting without actually coming outright and saying it, but i see no difference in this and someone calling me a handful of asterisks......

how is anyone supposed to express their annoynace etc......if i call someone a big fat pansy...meaning it in a nasty way is this insulting?

No, as I said earlier, it doesn't matter if you are offending or insulting someone.
