What version firefox? What version windows?

Does it work in IE?

Also are you trying to get onsite using a bookmark? Try typing www.hotukdeals.com directly into the address bar.

Original Poster

hi people, ok tried IE, still not working and tried entering www.hotukdeals from address bar, bookmark folder

I have adjusted the bookmark address several times with no luck

It doesnt make sense this because my laptop works fine on the same connection

All other sites work fine on the desktop, just cant understand why hotukdeals isnt working

Original Poster

using Latest firefox, and Windows XP Pro SP2 (fully updated)

Original Poster

just a quick update, just reset router, made sure all plugs are connected etc, and still no joy

all other websites, such as google, ebay, mse, youtube, myspace are working fine

Do you have any netnanny type programs on your PC, ie Peer Guardian etc? Just wondering if HUKD has managed to make it onto the banned list somehow. Failing that is there anybody with computer knowledge in your house that could have messed with the Hosts file on the computer?

Original Poster

i did have peer guardian running, but that was one of the first thing that i disabled, mcafee has also been disabled.

I'm the only person that uses the PC and have access to it, like i say the last time it worked on the desktop was before the site update

I'm really out of ideas now

Ok well paste this into explorer : C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Have a look at the hosts file (open it in notepad) and see if theres a line that reads www.hotdeals.co.uk or similar. If so then delete it, reboot and try again. If not then i'm out of ideas as well, unless its a firewall problem on the PC :? You're sure that PG is definately switched off? Also do you have a proxy server setup on your browser? Might be worth checking and disabling if you do, check the laptop too as it may be the other way round, you can connect to the site becasue it has a proxy set up.... Oh the speculation

Try this … Try this http://network-tools.com/default.asp?prog=trace&host=www.hotukdeals.com and copy the result back here.

I was trying windows traceroute to get a direct addy but it didn't work.

That works for me.

gonna try the laptop on the ethernet cable rather than wireless

one sec

Well I dont see a problem with that trace, the mystery deepens.

Original Poster

ok just tried the ethernet in the notebook and the site loads fine on the notebook, same port and cable as the desktop was plugged into

plugged the same cable back into desktop and again still no sign of life

So it doesnt resolve HUKD in either FFox or IE7 on your desktop? But other sites are fine on both?

Original Poster

yes nor hotukdeals will load up on firefox or IE7 both updated and current versions etc

I've tried all my bookmarks and everyone works fine

I've tried typing in hotukdeals in the google search bar and following the link = page cannont be found

same applies when i search in ask, altavista and manually typing it in the address bar in either FF OR IE7

What programs are running on your desktop at the same time? It must be something to do with that.

Original Poster

only got firefox running when i load up the task manager, i've not installed anything for quite a while and not changed any settings etc

Original Poster

is there a beta hotukdeals link that i could try or something?

Clear cookies in FFox and type this hotukdeals.com/ into the addy bar and tell us what error msg ffox gives if it cant resolve the forums.

Original Poster

ok the error message it gives is:

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at www.hotukdeals.com.

* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Try this in the address bar :

no sorry that wont work on desktop, works fine on notebook, goes straight to hotukdeal site

i'm starting to worry now, never had this problem before

A DNS server issue that can result in failure of repeated attempts to open certain websites is that Windows XP cache unsuccessful DNS lookup attempts. This means that you may not be able to view a particular website until the cached result expires. By default, the expiration time is 5 minutes. As a workaround, you can flush the DNS cache (For Windows XP, "Start -> Run -> ipconfig /flushdns") then try loading the site again.

If only web pages with IP-addresses beginning with one particular number won't load, then there may well be a problem with the subnetmask in the router. Check by sending a ping. Pings to all addresses beginning with this number will get lost, while others don't. Define the subnetmask more precisely. This has solved elusive problems more than once. An example of what has actually worked: IP-address: 85.x.x.x. Subnetmask that didn't work: Subnetmask in the router that has solved the problem:

tried that mike, still no joy, it cant be the router dns as ive just tried my brothers base unit with the same ethernet socket and that loads up fine, its the computer

It looks like I'm going have to format and start all over again, I really don't want to do this as it's going to take me days to back things up

Is really got me stuck, never had this before, seems strange that every site that ive thrown at it works apart from hotukdeals.

Hmm this is odd blackster. It does sound like a dns issue of sorts. You tried the flushing the dns on your desktop?

Sorry I cant offer any more suggestions other than using XP's system restore to try jumping back to a month or more before the problem started to see if you can find a date stored that works, obviously you may have some current data loss but its maybe better than a full reinstall.

Original Poster

thanks guys for you help, I think I'm going to re-install windows, with a full format, just a pain in the **** really.

Will let you know within the next few hours/days how it goes

Whoa I don't know if I'd do a reinstall! There has to be a way to get it loading. As an idea - try putting in a different dns server in firefox prefs and see if that makes any difference.

Original Poster

not quite well up on this dns server thing, ive flushed the dns on my desktop

Try disabling peer guardian also blackster - I wonder if that's blocking dns?

only got firefox running when i load up the task manager, i've not … only got firefox running when i load up the task manager, i've not installed anything for quite a while and not changed any settings etc

I meant other things that were running, for example, I have skype and zonealarm running in my taskbar...

I know of few people who cant connect to hotukdeals since they upgraded their website. Unfortunately if they can access hotukdeals they wont be able to contribute or see any advice solution here.

I did had a similar problem with only one of the families 3 laptops, tried to remember what I did to fix problem but not sure how/why but the laptop working ok now. I assumed the problem must be to do with something Hotukdeals left and 'looks at' on the computer and their new websites doesn't like it. I deleted all cookies, history, temp internet files, . . etc switched off virus checkers, firewalls. I also ran Registry Mechanic.

Sorry cant be more helpful

Hi porine, welcome to HUKD

I'm also having problems since the site changed. At work and on my desktop no probs but my laptop will not access HUKD! that's with neither IE of firefox. Have tried umpteen different things but with no luck at all.

Original Poster

As of tonight I'm still having problems, I don't really want to format the whole computer just so i can view hotukdeals, but the problem is really anoying.

I shall hang fire a few days and see if anyone can come up with a solution, it's not something simple, I'm quite a novice at computers but this one has got me scratching my head.

Before the site update it all worked fine, no settings have been changed etc

Thanks all

First try:

Click Start > Run.
Enter ipconfig /flushdns in the Open: textbox.

Then try hotukdeals.com

If that doesn't work please do the following and paste the result here:

Click Start > Run
Enter cmd
Enter tracert www.hotukdeals.com

It's looking like a reformat me thinks

If this helps in anyway at all, I did have it auto-refreshing the deal page with a firefox program, so I'm wondering if when you took the side down something happend?

I've since taken this program off and re-installed firefox, but the same thing happens in IE-7 so I suppose it can't be that
