That wasn't what I was asking - there's little point in reporting or reporting in an unsuitable fashion if the moderators do not believe these posts should be removed hence asking explicitly.

If so, what is the best way of reporting them?

ok...

No doubt if a mod answers in this thread they will say any off topic posts etc that you come across to just report them and they will take a look. Like I said nothing more you can do tbh

Are they off-topic though? The posts are specifically referring to the topic so it may be they don't feel they should be removed. There's no point starting reports a large series of posts just to find that they're seen as fit to be left and therefore wasting a considerable amount of time.

thats what I was thinking, have you actually reported any comments you have seen? If so and they are still there? then the issue might be above, that they are not seen as irrelevant to the topic so dont get removed.

Original Poster

I've not reported any posts as of yet, I'd prefer to see a response from a moderator first.

John

In my opinion the issue too subjective to be effectively dealt with by reporting. Any product whether premium or specialist tends to get short shrift on the Forum.
Apart from having a section for specialist/premium products (ha ha) which I assume would be a disaster the only answer is for Op to make it crystal clear in the original post why the products is special and who it will appeal to. Hopefully then others will "walk on by". You would still get the silly post of "I can get this down the pound shop" type, but I guess you could try and report these and see what happens.
The notable exception to this is computers and computer related products

It's not just premium deals, it's site wide.

They either can't handle the workload or don't care.

Admin

It's not about not handling workload or not caring. It's more to do with letting everyone have their fair say.

Opinions are subjective, it's an open deals site and members are entitled to comment on deals, no matter whether premium or not. As long as this doesn't cross into the territory of "flaming" then there shouldn't be a problem.

If you do feel that line has been crossed, then use the report function, as you would across the rest of the site. We'll assess and action where appropriate. Comments on all deals should be encouraged to be constructive and all members should be civil and respectful towards everyone on the site, as stated in the code of conduct.

I agree that people should be able to comment on deals as that's one of the benefits of using the site but I think there's a clear stage when the comments are of no benefit and simply there essentially for flaming. On the 5870 thread some people pointed out a good deal on the 5850 which is a very similar graphics card with slightly less performance, and a couple of others highlighting the impending release of the new Nvidia cars - this type of comment was clearly very relevent to anyone considering a 5870 purchase.

However what dragged the topic down were the large number of comments of little value - "you could buy a whole PC for this", "Get an Xbox 360/PS3/Wii instead" (multiple times by one person alone), etc. which in turn causes people to respond and just clogs up the thread.

Banned

just get a mod to post the product, then if anyone votes it down, they get banned

that will solve it

The answer appears to be this behaviour is entirely acceptable, several days agoI reported one of the users who had posted multiple posts that were deliberately inflammatory (the user himself openly admitted this) but all the posts remain.

John

That 5870 thread seriously needs cleaning up, more off-topic misk chatter than anything. Although without all that spam it would never have got as much heat or as much attention.

So I guess you cannot have it both ways. Usually this type of hardware deal flies by unnoticed and rarely goes above the 100c mark.

I haven't looked at the other thread so cannot comment. I totally agree with you though Johnmcl7 (about the 5870 thread), there is no way that half of those posts are opinions, thoughts or feelings. It is just random trolling by people who are bored.

They are most definitely off-topic, comparing the price of the graphics card to several hundred packets of haribo or a gaming console.. That is off-topic, whereas comparing them to other graphics cards, that is on-topic. You wouldn't post on a deal for a car that the person can get 2 motorcycles instead, nor would you post on a sofa deal saying they can get 40 bean bags. Pointless spam if you ask me. Although quite funny lol

I usually report stuff like that, but to be honest that thread is too far gone, I haven't got the patience to report all that lol. This sort of stuff should be pounced on instantly though and stopped, one visit from a moderator early on into that thread would of been enough. I guess if nobody reports though, there is nothing you can do if it slips by unnoticed.

Off topic comments were deleted. This is not a forum where only certain members can comment, it's open and all members are entitled to their say. You can't expect us to only allow some people to share their views? It would go entirely against the whole point of having a deals community.

Original Poster

The off topic comments are still there and I've already made it quite clear above that of course I think people should be able to comment but I don't think people should be allowed to post deliberately inflammatory comments intended to wind up those who are genuinely interested in the product available - said people were even openly admitting that's what they were doing yet all their comments remain. There's a clear difference between those offering genuine comments and those who are not.
