It uses the same thread format as Ask and Misc so it is classed as a Discussion

Fair enough, no great biggie
I'd personally be inclined to keep Competitions separate, as it's quite different in intention/audience to the other Discussions sections - unless there's going to be some other way to filter?

Also, I'd suggest a temporary sticky post in Discussions explaining the change, to try to minimise any confusion.

Is there going to be any limit to the amount of pointless threads one can post in the new 'discussions' format, mj?

Competitions can't be kept separate; it has to be included within this Discussions section and in here there will be its own group.

I didn't want you guys to just see the first change and not know what was happening which is why this thread was posted. When we move to the next stages of our new Discussions i'll provide more information on what has changed and why Then all future updates will go in its own Discussion group.

If you look at things which aren't "broke" and just allow them to remain as they are you cannot progress or move with current needs. Current discussions (Misc etc) worked as they intended but this was an intention from years ago. Things have to move on, you can't just think "it works, its fine".

Having seen how Discussions work in other countries I am very confident that you guys will like the changes once you've been able to get used to a different layout. The reason for the change is to improve discoverability of topics you'd like to be involved with and also know that your questions are being seen by those who can provide genuine advice. Right now Misc and Ask is too much of a general catch-all and we want to change that.
As @Wongy110 said in the other thread how is having to click more buttons an improvement.

you also said in the other thread this was asked for, maybe Pepper could set up some time of group made up of regular users to provide feedback, its been talked before in the last design changes. Hope its not the same as last time that it worked in another country so it must work every where, that was the same excuse about page scrolling last time.

"Right now Misc and Ask is too much of a general catch-all and we want to change that" by making them a single section eventually? If thats the case it won't work as you will get no one coming here for advice or to talk and we know that Pepper don't really want these sections as they take to much time to manage but there will be many on here who come for a chat, answer peoples questions and look at deals, without that you will lose so many of your customers. Sad fact is that I think this has already happened.

Edit After a few hours of using the new paths its painful, to many clicks, get into misc and then click and click again to get into Ask.

"Edit After a few hours of using the new paths its painful, to many clicks, get into misc and then click and click again to get into Ask" - I've already mentioned in this thread that the current placement of "Discussions" is a first step. The next step will see this come out of the dropdown and into the main menu bar (see my thread description).

Right now if you wanted to post something to this section (Ask or Misc) it goes into a general page and the discoverability on site isn't great. So the idea is your discussion can be assigned to a group and because we're able to show these groups in a header you can join in with the discussions or topics you have an interest in instead of just stumbling across them by chance. This header can be hidden so you don't have to see it.

To give you an idea, this is how it looks on Dealabs (the French hotukdeals):

Ignore the headings/groups as we won't necessarily have the same in the UK. As you can see though you have more filters so when you're wanting to get involved in discussion you can head to the group you want to participate in. So there is still a general misc (here is is BLA bla) but there is much better categorisation of the discussions you can have on site.

Our members are a massive source of knowledge with great expertise and I think we should be doing more to provide a better discussion platform where they can exchange this with each other.

Thanks Jay I can see groups helping though like in deals I would bet many will just look at an all tab if one is there, never ever used groups in deals myself.

The problem at the moment is before you clicked straight into misc or ask, now you need to go into discussion then choose either misc or ask want to go into the other it’s do it all again. Everywhere in the world productivity is buzz word but here it’s making things more difficult, more clicks and with groups if there is not a all tab that will be even worse.

it’s not like misc and ask are awash with millions of threads each day the numbers have gone down since the change in direction for the better I may add, so not sure even if there is a point in so many groups, it may be locking the stable door after the horse has bolted trying to provide a better platform.

The site might want to have a look at MSE forums on this, years ago it was a massive hub you went there daily and every sub category, your groups, had large number of people in them all of the time, you can see the numbers online in each category. You go there now and the extra groups they added and no one is in there, some groups haven’t seen updates in years. Similarly if you look at tripadvisors forum there are plenty places where people ask questions and no one bothers to reply. None of want that to happen here.

Well it'll actually the same amount of clicks to reach the Misc group. Soon: Discussion > Misc. Now: Menu > Misc

If you only want to stick to the general chat then bookmark the Misc group link so you don't have to click through each time. For the time being I think wait for the final release and provide some feedback based on that

Sorry Jay but its not the same number of clicks it used to be Menu, > Misc Menu > Ask now its Menu > Discussions > Misc then again for Ask its Menu > Discussions > Ask 6 clicks instead of 4 and the extra two are not in the menu path but in the screen. If it changes again soon then why on earth change it again in the first place, if I did that in my job I wouldn't be in my job any more Love the site but it really needs to get better at changes

When we're fully done with the release* this won't be an issue any longer. The Discussion won't be under the dropdown

Edit: *which should be next week so you won't have to wait too long!

I'm guilty of stopping doing this myself but back in the day we used to stick frequently-accessed webpages in our bookmarks, with the most frequently-accessed in the toolbar. One click.
"Having seen how Discussions work in other countries"....

Are other Countries allowed to discuss political and current affairs?

For the record, I'm rather worried about Angela.

I think this change is a good idea. App has already been like this and personally I am used to it. Much easier than looking through many different sections.

One thing that would be nice would be the ability to add a banner image to misc discussions, as notifications can look quite boring otherwise.

Ah, I see that this isn't as big a change as I thought - the split between Ask/Misc/Competitions is still there, just all below "Discussions" as a higher-level category.
Just make sure there is an All group. Can't see many people being bothered to only look at one category at a time. There's only about 20-30 new ask/misc questions a day anyway so can't see the point of sub-dividing these.
Better update @mutley1 as she/he is biggest user of section and should at least have some input on this
We used to have a Feedback section once, which was really useful, where we could post ideas ect but that vanished without trace.
